Simple Facts Concerning Nambu Algebras

A class of substitution equations arising in the extension of Jacobi identity for $n$-gebras is studied and solved. Graded bracket and cohomology adapted to the study of formal deformations are presented. New identities in the case of Nambu-Lie algebras are proved. The triviality in the Gerstenhaber sense of certain deformed n-skew-symmetric brackets, satisfying the Leibniz rule with respect to a star-product, is shown for n≥ 3.

Detection and visualization of physical knots in macromolecules

Abstract This manuscript provides a pedagogical introduction on how to determine and visualize simple physical knots occurring in polymers, proteins and DNA. We explain how the Alexander polynomial is computed and implemented in a simulation code, and how the structure can be simplified beforehand to save computer time. The concept of knottedness can also be extended in a statistical framework to chains which are not closed. The latter is exemplified by comparing statistics of knots in open random walks and closed random loops.

A Numerical Method for the Analysis of Plane-Strain Forming Processes with Unilateral Constraints

The Authors propose a numerical model for the solution of plane-strain forming processes, based on the linearization of the yield surface. This allows to employ the linear programming technique for the solution of the variational problem derived from the application of the upper-bound theorem. Such a model permits to take into account the unilateral constraints in a very simple way. Therefore it is well suited to solve a large class of problems, such as sheet forming, in which the unilateral constraints are often present.

Back to the Amitsur-Levitzki theorem: a super version for the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra osp(1, 2n)

We prove an Amitsur-Levitzki type theorem for the Lie superalgebras osp(1,2n) inspired by Kostant's cohomological interpretation of the classical theorem. We show that the Lie superalgebras gl(p,q) cannot satisfy an Amitsur-Levitzki type super identity if p, q are non zero and conjecture that neither can any other classical simple Lie superalgebra with the exception of osp(1,2n).

The Properties of Co2Cr1-xFexAl Heusler Compounds

The classical concept of band structure tuning as used for semiconductors by partly replacing one atom by a chemical neighbor without altering the structure is applied examplarily to the half-metallic ferromagnetic Heusler compound Co 2 Cr 1 - x Fe x Al. Band structure calculations are presented for ordered and disordered compounds. We present experimental and theoretical results. The connection between specific site disorder and the band structure is shown explicitly with particular emphasis on the half-metallic properties. A flexible approach to the crossing hazards problem

We propose a simple and flexible framework for the crossing hazards problem. The method is not confined to two-sample problems, but may also work with continuous exposure variables whose effect changes its sign at some time-point of the observed follow-up time. Penalized partial likelihood estimation relies upon the assumption of a smooth hazard ratio via low-rank basis splines with a conventional difference penalty to ensure smoothness, and additional ad hoc penalties to obtain restricted estimates useful in the context of crossing hazards. Numerical simulations of the mechanical characteristics of glass fibre reinforced C-profiles

A mechanical characterisation analysis on pultruded glass fibre reinforced C-shaped profiles, developed as modular construction elements to assemble fastening systems, such as doors, window frames and shutters is presented. The key idea is to perform the analysis, and all the related identification procedures of the material parameters, via a coupled approach, based on a limited number of standard laboratory tests and on the numerical finite element simulations of the same tests. We propose a simple analytical model to explain the possible appearance of the metallic conductivity in the two-dimensional (2D) ${\mathrm{LaAlO}}_{3}/{\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$ interface. Our model considers the interface within a macroscopic approach, which is usual for semiconductor heterojunctions and is based on drift-diffusion equations. The solution of these equations allows us to obtain the positions of band edges as a function of distances from the interface.
