Stochastic linearization of MDOF systems under parametric excitations

Abstract The stochastic linearization approach is examined for non-linear systems subjected to parametric type excitations. It is shown that, for these systems too, stochastic linearization and Gaussian closure are two equivalent approaches if the former is applied to the coefficients of the Ito differential rule. A critical review of other stochastic linearization approaches is also presented and discussed by means of simple examples.
A spiking network for body size learning inspired by the fruit fly

The concept of peripersonal space is an interesting research topics for psychologists, neurobiologists and for robotic applications. A living being can learn the representation of its own body to take the correct behavioral decision when interacting with the world. To transfer these important learning mechanisms on bio-robots, simple and efficient solutions can be found in the insect world. In this paper a neural-based model for body-size learning is proposed taking into account the results obtained in experiments with fruit flies. Simulations and experimental results on a roving platform are reported and compared with the biological counterpart.
The helicity matching approach to heavy hadron form factors

Abstract I discuss the helicity matching approach to current-induced transitions among heavy hadrons. This approach provides a simple and intuitively appealing access to the calculation of heavy hadron form factors which is entirely equivalent to the approach of Isgur and Wise and other authors, who use different techniques to obtain the same results. We work out explicit examples in the meson and baryon sectors and discuss possible approximations to the most general approach and some of their implications for future experiments.

MODELLING USER UNCERTAINTY FOR DISCLOSURE RISK AND DATA UTILITY

In this paper we show how a simple model that captures user uncertainty can be used to define suitable measures of disclosure risk and data utility. The model generalizes previous results of Duncan and Lambert.1 We present several examples to illustrate how the new measures can be used to implement existing optimality criteria for the choice of the best form of data release.

Hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) techniques are widely used to study chemical reactions in large systems. Because of the computational cost associated with the high dimensionality of these systems, the quantum description is usually restricted to low-level methods, such as semiempirical Hamiltonians. The addition of dianions of carboxylic acids to bromoacetonitrile, leads, in good yields, to the corresponding γ-cyanoacids that give γ-aminoacids on hydrogenation. This two-step methodology improves the results previously described.
A novel method for harmonic mitigation for single-phase five-level cascaded H-Bridge inverter

The efficiency of a system is a very important parameter for high power electrical drives applications. Moreover, the efficiency of power converters plays a fundamental role. Aim of this work, is to propose a novel selective harmonic mitigation method without solving non-linear equations. Through a very simple approach, the polynomial equations which drive the control angles have been detected for a single-phase five-level cascaded H-Bridge inverter. The obtained polynomial equations can be easily implemented in a digital system to real-time operation. The paper also presents the simulation analysis and experimental validation.

Superimposing additively a two-dimensional noise process to deterministic input signals (bars) the neurons of area 17 show a class-specific reaction for the task of signal extraction. Moving both parts of the signals simultaneously and varying the signal to noise ratio (S/N) the simple cells achieve the same performance as resulted from the psychophysical experiment. If the input signals of the visual system in the cat are statistical patterns in space and time, a complete system analysis can be carried out. What counts here as a system are the neuronal networks between retina and recording site. In the case of linearity, one obtains the temporal impulse response functions at every point in the receptive field with the aid of correlation methods. The measuring time is about one minute. Some aspects of the procedure are explained in terms of examples.
