Looking Beyond Genres: Identifying Meaningful Semantic Layers from Tags in Online Music Collections

2011

A scheme for identifying the semantic layers of music-related tags is presented. Arguments are provided why the applications of the tags cannot be effectively pursued without a reasonable understanding of their semantic qualities. The identification scheme consists of a set of filters. The first is related with social consensus, user-count ratio, and n-gram properties of tags. The next relies on look-up functions across multiple databases to determine the probable semantic layer of each tag. Examples of the semantic layers with prevalence rates are given based on application of the scheme to a subset of the Million Song Dataset. Finally, a validation of the results was carried out with an i…

Application of adaptive models for the determination of the thermal behaviour of a photovoltaic panel

2013

The use of reliable forecasting models for the PV temperature is necessary for a more correct evaluation of energy and economic performances. Climatic conditions certainly have a remarkable influence on thermo-electric behaviour of the PV panel but the physical system is too complex for an analytical representation. A neural-network-based approach for solar panel temperature modelling is here presented. The models were trained using a set of data collected from a test facility. Simulation results of the trained neural networks are presented and compared with those obtained with an empirical correlation.

Springback Evaluation In Basic Sheet Metal Stamping Processes

2000

In the present paper a measurement technique based on the shadow moire method has been set up in order to evaluate the springback phenomenon in deep drawing operations. Two proper coefficients are introduced to quantitatively describe the effect considered. In particular the proposed technique is able to acquire the final profile of the drawn parts along one or more generatrices, once extracted out from the dies and to compare such profile with the ideal one derived from the dies CAD geometry. The proposed technique has been applied to an axysimmetrical deep drawing operation and moreover the influence of the blankholder force level and of the lubricating conditions have been taken into acc…

An Optical Technique for Springback Measurement in Axisymmetrical Deep Drawing Operations

2001

Abstract In this paper, a measurement technique based on the shadow moire method has been set up to evaluate the springback phenomenon in deep drawing operations. Two proper coefficients are introduced to quantitatively describe the investigated effect. In particular, the proposed technique is able to acquire the final profile of the drawn parts along one or more lateral contour, once extracted out from the dies, and compare such profile with the ideal one derived from the dies CAD geometry. The proposed technique has been applied to an axisymmetrical deep drawing operation, and, moreover, the influence of the blankholder force level and lubricating conditions has been taken into account. Features for Text Comparison

2008

The main purpose of this paper is to deliver appropriate tool to find similarities between texts. The area of interest covers comparing large amount of different texts grouped in various areas of knowledge. Similarity is defined as distance between two texts and as this the measure may be calculated as the set of parameters based on features.

Induced ℓ<inf>2</inf> control of discrete-time Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems with time-varying delays via dynamic output feedback

2012

This paper is concerned with analyzing a novel model transformation of discrete-time Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems with time-varying delays and applying it to dynamic output feedback (DOF) controller design. A new auxiliary model is proposed by employing a new approximation for time-varying delay state, and then delay partitioning method is used to analyze the scaled small gain of this auxiliary model. A sufficient condition on discrete-time T-S fuzzy systems with time-varying delays, which guarantees the corresponding closed-loop system to be asymptotically stable and has an induced l 2 disturbance attenuation performance, is derived by employing the scaled small gain theorem. Then the…

A Tool-Based Approach for Essentializing Software Engineering Practices

2019

Software Engineers work using highly diverse methods and practices, and general theories in software engineering are lacking. A recent attempt at creating a common ground in the area of software engineering methodologies has been the Essence Theory of Software Engineering. Essence is a method-agnostic progress management framework and a meta-method for Software Engineering (SE). However, tooling for Essence is still lacking. Without dedicated tools and other instruments, a meta-method such as Essence is cumbersome to utilize by practitioners and students. Indeed, Essence currently suffers from a lack of widespread practitioner adoption. In this paper, we thus present an Open Source tool for…

Current Software-as-a-Service Business Models: Evidence from Finland

2012

This paper characterizes the business models of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) firms based on their value proposition, customer segments, revenue streams, and customer relationship, and analyzes interconnections of these business model elements. The target set of 163 Finnish SaaS and ASP firms was first compared to other software firms and then clustered into four clusters based on indicator data of their business model elements. The comparison reveals that the SaaS and ASP firms have smaller customer and transaction sizes than software firms in general. The resulting classification reveals two different configurations, a pure-play SaaS model and an enterprise SaaS model, and the typical fact…

Modeling musical attributes to characterize ensemble recordings using rhythmic audio features

2011

In this paper, we present the results of a pre-study on music performance analysis of ensemble music. Our aim is to implement a music classification system for the description of live recordings, for instance to help musicologist and musicians to analyze improvised ensemble performances. The main problem we deal with is the extraction of a suitable set of audio features from the recorded instrument tracks. Our approach is to extract rhythm-related audio features and to apply them for regression-based modeling of eight more general musical attributes. The model based on Partial Least-Squares Regression without preceding Principal Component Analysis performed best for all of the eight attribu…

An Encoding in Metaheuristics for the Minimum Communication Spanning Tree Problem

2009

Problem-specific encodings can improve the performance of metaheuristics, such as genetic algorithms or simulated annealing. This paper studies the link-biased (LB) encoding, which is a tree representation, and applies metaheuristics using this encoding to the minimum communication spanning tree (MCST) problem. Given the communication requirements of the nodes, the MCST problem seeks a communication spanning tree with minimum total cost. Optimal solutions for MCST problems are similar to minimum spanning trees (MSTs), and the LB encoding exploits this property by encoding trees similar to MSTs with higher probability. The paper investigates how to systematically design problem-specific enc…
