Equal access to the top? Measuring selection into finnish academia

In this article, we draw a parallel between equality of opportunity in educational transitions and equality of opportunity in academic careers. In both cases, many methodological problems can be ameliorated by the use of longitudinal rather than cross-sectional data. We illustrate this point by using Finnish full-population register data to follow the educational and academic careers of the 1964–1966 birth cohorts from birth to the present day. We show how the Finnish professoriate is highly selected both in terms of parental background and in terms of gender. Owing to their common history, similarities in language and culture, long traditions in political collaboration and the shared Nordic societal model, an assumption is often made that the operational and regulatory context of universities is similar in the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The role of temperament in children's affective and behavioral responses in achievement situations

Abstract Although students' affects and behaviors in achievement situations have been shown to be influenced by their previous learning experiences, less is known about how they relate to students' dispositional characteristics, such as temperament. This study examined to what extent children's temperament is related to their affective and behavioral responses in achievement situations. Teachers rated first-graders' ( n = 153) temperamental characteristics in the Fall semester. Quality of educational dialogue and association with students’ academic performance

The study used a mixed-methods approach to examine the associations between the quality of educational dialogue and students' academic performance and to analyse what kinds of dialogic teaching patterns of different levels of quality can be identified in classroom lessons. A total of 158 Grade 6 lessons were video-recorded, and the quality of the educational dialogue was assessed using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System-Secondary (CLASS-S) observational instrument. The present text focuses on a relationship between higher education, institutional and symbolic violence and exclusion, practicing as a challenge based on reflections on the existence of evasion in Brazilian university. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastellaan luokanopettajaopiskelijoiden (n=54) kuvauksia tekstien tuottamisesta heidän ensimmäisen yliopistovuotensa aikana. Tutkimusaineistona olivat opiskelijoiden vastaukset lomakekyselyyn heidän ensimmäisenä ja toisena opiskeluvuotenaan. Tutkimusaineisto analysoitiin aineistolähtöisen sisällönanalyysin ja kvantifioinnin avulla. Opiskelijat kielensivät tuottaneensa ensimmäisen opiskeluvuotensa aikana 102 erilaista tekstiä. Tässä tutkimuksessa rajaudutaan tarkastelemaan varhaiskasvatusta tieteenalan perspektiivistä. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan akateemisen kentän muotoutumista ja varhaiskasvatuksen sisällöllistä määrittymistä. Aineistona ovat Suomen varhaiskasvatuksen professoreiden virantäyttöprosesseissa tuotetut dokumentit. Tutkimuksemme painottuu erityisesti akateemisen kentän keskeisten toimijoiden - asiantuntijoiden ja viranhakijoiden - identifioimiseen. Työmme kohdentuu lähihistoriaan ja sitä voidaan luonnehtia akateemisen varhaiskasvatuksen kentän historiaa ja muotoutumista koskevaksi perustutkimukseksi.
