Immediate Effects of Vibration Transmitted to the Hand

Summary Three different research projects have been accomplished on the problems: biomechanical behaviour of the hand-arm-system; subjective sensation; physiological changes. Some of the main results were:—the wrist and—with smaller amplifications—the elbow show resonances at low vibration frequencies (10–20 Hz);—with constant acceleration subjective perception decreases with increasing frequency;—application of static grip force—without vibration—causes significant reduction of the skin temperature, which under vibration stress remains at the same lowered level.

Radiation pressure-assisted acceleration of ions using multi-component foils in high-intensity laser–matter interactions

Experimental results on the acceleration of protons and carbon ions from ultra-thin polymer foils at intensities of up to 6x10(19)Wcm(-2) are presented revealing quasi-monoenergetic spectral characteristics for different ion species at the same time. For carbon ions and protons, a linear correlation between the cutoff energy and the peak energy is observed when the laser intensity is increased. Particle-in-cell simulations supporting the experimental results imply an ion acceleration mechanism driven by the radiation pressure as predicted for multi-component foils at these intensities.

Influence of Confining Walls on the Dynamics of Supercooled Simple Liquids

The relaxation dynamics of supercooled liquids in the bulk shows many features that are not seen in the dynamics of liquids at elevated temperatures, such as a very slow decay of the time-correlation functions, stretching, etc. The dynamics of liquids that are close to a surface (free space, confining wall, etc.) is even more complex in that the stretching is increased and in that there is evidence for the presence of multiple time scales. In this paper we review some results of recent molecular dynamics computer simulations in which we investigated the dynamics of a simple glass forming liquid in the vicinity of a wall. An absence of neutrinos associated with cosmic-ray acceleration in gamma-ray bursts

2012

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) have been proposed as a leading candidate for acceleration of ultra high-energy cosmic rays, which would be accompanied by emission of TeV neutrinos produced in proton-photon interactions during acceleration in the GRB fireball. Two analyses using data from two years of the IceCube detector produced no evidence for this neutrino emission, placing strong constraints on models of neutrino and cosmic-ray production in these sources.

Context. Colliding collisionless shocks appear across a broad variety of astrophysical phenomena and are thought to be possible sources of particle acceleration in the Universe. Aims. The main goal of our experimental and computational work is to understand the effect of the interpenetration between two subcritical collisionless shocks on particle energization. Methods. AbstractThe convergence of many iterative procedures, in particular that of the conjugate gradient method, strongly depends on the condition number of the linear system to be solved. In cases with a large condition number, therefore, preconditioning is often used to transform the system into an equivalent one, with a smaller condition number and therefore faster convergence. Free radical bulk polymerizations exhibit complex kinetics due to the viscosity increase during the polymerization process. Especially the termination rate constant can be strongly influenced by the mobility of polymer chains in the polymerization mixture. As a consequence an autoacceleration period, the so-called Trommsdorff effect, can be observed often. static optimal estimation of joint accelerations for inverse dynamics problem solution

In inverse dynamics computations, the accuracy of the solution strongly depends on the accuracy of the input data. In particular, estimated joint moments are highly sensitive to uncertainties in acceleration data. The aim of the present work was to improve classical inverse dynamics computations by providing an accurate estimation of accelerations. Accelerations are usually calculated from noise-polluted position data using numerical double differentiation, which amplifies measurement noise.
