Antecedents of intensified job demands : evidence from Austria
2019
Purpose In order to understand the driving forces behind intensified job demands (IJDs), the purpose of this paper is to examine demographic factors, structural work-related factors, personal and job resources as antecedents of IJDs. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on cross-sectional (n=4,963) and longitudinal (n=2,055) quantitative data sets of Austrian employees. Data sets were analyzed via regression analyses. Findings The results showed that IJDs, as assessed through five sub-dimensions: work intensification, intensified job-related, career-related planning and decision-making demands, intensified demands for skills and for knowledge-related learning, remained fairly sta…
Reproduction of kinematics of cars involved in crash events using nonlinear autoregressive models
2012
Vehicle crashworthiness can be assessed by the variety of methods - the most common and direct one is a vehicle crash test. Visual inspection and obtained measurements, such as car acceleration, are used to examine impact severity of an occupant and overall car safety. However, those experiments are complex, time-consuming, and expensive. We propose a method to reproduce car kinematics during a collision using a feedforward neural network to estimate the system by use of nonlinear autoregressive (NAR) models. Specifically, feasibility of applying neural networks with an NAR model to the analysis of experimental data is explored by application to measurements of a vehicle crash test. This mo…
3D simulations of wind-jet interaction in massive X-ray binaries
2010
High-mass microquasars may produce jets that will strongly interact with surrounding stellar winds on binary system spatial scales. We study the dynamics of the collision between a mildly relativistic hydrodynamical jet of supersonic nature and the wind of an OB star. We performed numerical 3D simulations of jets that cross the stellar wind with the code Ratpenat. The jet head generates a strong shock in the wind, and strong recollimation shocks occur due to the initial overpressure of the jet with its environment. These shocks can accelerate particles up to TeV energies and produce gamma-rays. The recollimation shock also strengthens jet asymmetric Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities produced i…
Convergence and applications of vector rational approximations
1992
The Padé approximants and their generalizations are for many years the matter of intense researchs .Yet , many theoritical problems stay in suspense : problems of exitence and unicity , problems of convergence and acceleration of convergence .The purpose of the present work vas to give answers to such questions .In the first section we take an in terest in vector Padé approximants of matrix series .Conditions of existence and unicity ,results of convergence are given ,as also the link with the theory of Lanczos method for the resolution of linear Systems . We utilize also the vector Padé approximants to provide a simultaneous approximation of a function and its derivative .In the second sec…
Optimal control of the atmospheric arc of a space shuttle and numerical simulations with multiple-shooting method
2005
This article, continuation of previous works, presents the applications of geometric optimal control theory to the analysis of the Earth re-entry problem for a space shuttle where the control is the angle of bank, the cost is the total amount of thermal flux, and the system is subject to state constraints on the thermal flux, the normal acceleration and the dynamic pressure. Our analysis is based on the evaluation of the reachable set using the maximum principle and direct computations with the boundary conditions according to the CNES research project\footnote{The project is partially supported by the Centre National d'Etude Spatiales.}. The optimal solution is approximated by a concatenat…
A Mobile Computing Framework for Pervasive Adaptive Platforms
2012
International audience; Ubiquitous computing is now the new computing trend, such systems that interact with their environment require self-adaptability. Bioinspiration is a natural candidate to provide the capability to handle complex and changing scenarios. This paper presents a programming framework dedicated to pervasive platforms programming. This bioinspired and agentoriented framework has been developed within the frame of the PERPLEXUS European project that is intended to provide support for bioinspiration-driven system adaptability. This framework enables the platform to adapt itself to application requirements at high-level while using hardware acceleration at node level. The resu…
Correlation of the highest-energy cosmic rays with the positions of nearby active galactic nuclei
2008
Data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory provide evidence for anisotropy in the arrival directions of the cosmic rays with the ighest-energies, which are correlated with the positions of relatively nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) [Pierre Auger Collaboration, Science 318 (2007) 938]. The correlation has maximum significance for cosmic rays with energy greater than ~6 x 1019 eV and AGN at a distance less than ~75 Mpc. We have confirmed the anisotropy at a confidence level of more than 99% through a test with parameters specified a priori, using an independent data set. The observed correlation is compatible with the hypothesis that cosmic rays with the highest-energies originate fro…
INTEGRAL serendipitous detection of the gamma-ray microquasar LS 5039
2006
LS 5039 is the only X-ray binary persistently detected at TeV energies by the Cherenkov HESS telescope. It is moreover a gamma-ray emitter in the GeV and possibly MeV energy ranges. To understand important aspects of jet physics, like the magnetic field content or particle acceleration, and emission processes, such as synchrotron and inverse Compton (IC), a complete modeling of the multiwavelength data is necessary. LS 5039 has been detected along almost all the electromagnetic spectrum thanks to several radio, infrared, optical and soft X-ray detections. However, hard X-ray detections above 20 keV have been so far elusive and/or doubtful, partly due to source confusion for the poor spatial…
Searches for anisotropies in the arrival directions of the highest energy cosmic rays detected by the Pierre Auger Observatory
2015
We analyze the distribution of arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory in 10 years of operation. The data set, about three times larger than that used in earlier studies, includes arrival directions with zenith angles up to $80^\circ$, thus covering from $-90^\circ$ to $+45^\circ$ in declination. After updating the fraction of events correlating with the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the Vron-Cetty and Vron catalog, we subject the arrival directions of the data with energies in excess of 40 EeV to different tests for anisotropy. We search for localized excess fluxes and for self-clustering of event directions at angular scales up t…
