Oxygen Transfer from Trimethylamine N ‐Oxide to Cu I Complexes Supported by Pentanitrogen Ligands

2020

[N,N-bis(1-methyl-2-benzimidazolyl)methyl-N-(bis-2-pyridylmethyl)amine] (L1) and [N,N-bis(2-quinolylmethyl)-N-bis(2-pyridyl)methylamine] (L2) were employed to prepare CuII and CuI complexes for spectroscopic and structural characterization. [L1CuII(H2O)](NO3)2 and [L2CuII(NO3)]NO3 have Jahn–Teller distorted octahedral geometries and give rise to isotropic EPR spectra in frozen solution. [L1CuI(CH3CN)]OTf and [L2CuI(CH3CN)]OTf have distorted trigonal bipyramidal and tetrahedral solid-state structures, respectively. The N-donors display labile behavior in solution, based on variable-temperature 1H NMR studies. Addition of trimethylamine N-oxide (Me3NO) to solutions of [L1CuI(CH3CN)]OTf and [L…

Light Induced C-C Coupling of 2-Chlorobenzazoles with Carbamates, Alcohols, and Ethers.

2016

A light induced, transition-metal-free C-C coupling reaction of 2-chlorobenzazoles with aliphatic carbamates, alcohols, and ethers is presented. Inexpensive reagents, namely sodium acetate, benzophenone, water, and acetonitrile, are employed in a simple reaction protocol using a cheap and widely available 25 W energy saving UV-A lamp at ambient temperature.

Modulating the DNA cleavage ability of copper(II) Schiff bases through ternary complex formation

2018

Copper(II) complexes with the potentially tridentate Schiff bases N-[(3-ethoxy-2-hydroxyphenyl)methylidene]-N′-tosylbenzene-1,2-diamine (H2L1) and N-[(2-hydroxynaphthanyl)methylidene]-N′-tosylbenzene-1,2-diamine (H2L2) have been synthesized by electrochemical oxidation of the metal in an electrochemical cell containing a solution of the corresponding ligand in acetonitrile. Adducts of these compounds with 2,2′-bipyridine (2,2′-bpy), 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) were also obtained. The complexes have been characterized by microanalysis, mass spectrometry, EPR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies, as well as DFT calculations. The ligand H2L1 and the compounds [CuL1(H2O)]·…

The combined effect on initial glucose concentration and pH control strategies for acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation by Clostridium acetobut…

2021

Abstract The use and depletion of fossil fuels raised the interest in biofuels like biobutanol. Clostridium acetobutylicum DSM 792 is capable of producing biobutanol through ABE fermentation. Butanol production can be influenced by low sugar concentrations, like those obtained after hydrolysis of pre-treated lignocellulosic biomass. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the initial glucose concentrations (33, 66 and 100 g L−1) and pH control strategies on biobutanol production and glucose consumption. Uncontrolled pH fermentation exhibited low butanol production due to either glucose exhaustion (33 g L−1) or the phenomenon of acid crash (66 and 100 g L−1), which was alleviated by th…

Acetogenins from Annonaceae family. Their potential biological applications

2019

The aim of this contribution has been to continue with the knowledge about newly isolated acetogenins from Annonaceae family for the last fifteen years. This review will report classification, extraction, isolation, elucidation of the structure, biological activities and mechanism of action of such interesting natural products. In fact, out of the 532 compounds reviewed, 115 previously non-described annonaceous acetogenins have been added to the list of isolated compounds from 2005 to May 2019.

The dominance of the herbicide resistance cost in several Arabidopsis thaliana mutant lines

2004

Abstract Resistance evolution depends upon the balance between advantage and disadvantage (cost) conferred in treated and untreated areas. By analyzing morphological characters and simple fitness components, the cost associated with each of eight herbicide resistance alleles (acetolactate synthase, cellulose synthase, and auxin-induced target genes) was studied in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The use of allele-specific PCR to discriminate between heterozygous and homozygous plants was used to provide insights into the dominance of the resistance cost, a parameter rarely described. Morphological characters appear more sensitive than fitness (seed production) because 6 vs. 4 differen…

Removal of acetone from air emissions by biotrickling filters: providing solutions from laboratory to full-scale

2018

A full-scale biotrickling filter (BTF) treating acetone air emissions of wood-coating activities showed difficulties to achieve outlet concentrations lower than 125 mg C m-3, especially for high inlet concentrations and oscillating emissions. To solve this problem, a laboratory investigation on acetone removal was carried out simulating typical industrial conditions: discontinuous and variable inlet concentrations and intermittent spraying. The results were evaluated in terms of removal efficiency and outlet gas emission pattern. Industrial emissions and operational protocols were simulated: inlet load up to 70 g C m-3 h-1 during 2 cycles of 4 h per day and intermittent trickling of 15 min …

Prohexadione calcium is herbicidal to the sunflower root parasite Orobanche cumana

2020

BACKGROUND The obligatory sunflower root parasite Orobanche cumana Wallr. deprives its host of essential nutrients, resulting in a dramatic reduction in yield and biomass. A post-emergence application with an imidazolinone herbicide on an imidazolinone-tolerant sunflower is highly effective against O. cumana. The herbicide inhibits the enzyme acetohydroxy acid synthase and consequently, growth of the parasite is inhibited, although the sunflower survives the treatment through mutations in the target enzyme. Interestingly, field studies have shown that a combined application of an imidazolinone herbicide with prohexadione resulted in reduced emergence of O. cumana compared with the sole appl…

The Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Activity of Food Products of Rhizophora stylosa Fruit (Coffee and Tea Mangrove)

2018

The objective of this study is to investigate the bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity of coffee and tea mangrove (locally known in Indonesia) produced from the fruit of Rhizophora stylosa. Furthermore, three raw materials of coffee mangrove were also investigated to clarify their potencies. The crude extracts of five samples were subjected to antioxidant assay using DPPH. The results show that the extract of tea mangrove has the strongest activity; then, it was successfully fractionated using different polarity of solvents and yielded acetone and methanol fractions that had high antioxidant activity. The acetone fraction was purified and gave fractions A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, and A6, b…

Parthenolide and DMAPT exert cytotoxic effects on breast cancer stem-like cells by inducing oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and necrosis

2016

Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs) are aggressive forms of breast carcinoma associated with a high rate of recidivism. In this paper, we report the production of mammospheres from three lines of TNBC cells and demonstrate that both parthenolide (PN) and its soluble analog dimethylaminoparthenolide (DMAPT) suppressed this production and induced cytotoxic effects in breast cancer stem-like cells, derived from dissociation of mammospheres. In particular, the drugs exerted a remarkable inhibitory effect on viability of stem-like cells. Such an effect was suppressed by N-acetylcysteine, suggesting a role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the cytotoxic effect. Instead z-VAD, a ge…
