New β-Lactam-β-Lactamase Inhibitor Combinations.

The limited armamentarium against drug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli has led to the development of several novel β-lactam-β-lactamase inhibitor combinations (BLBLIs). In this review, we summarize their spectrum of in vitro activities, mechanisms of resistance, and pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) characteristics. A summary of available clinical data is provided per drug. Four approved BLBLIs are discussed in detail. Bacteriophages are bacterial viruses, capable of killing even multi-drug resistant bacterial cells. For this reason, therapeutic use of phages is considered as a possible alternative to conventional antibiotics. However, phages are very host specific in comparison to wide-spectrum antibiotics and thus preparation of phage-cocktails beforehand against pathogens can be difficult. Induction of ambuic acid derivatives by the endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis lespedezae through an OSMAC approach

Abstract Ten new ambuic acid derivatives, pestallic acids H–Q including one new iodinated natural product along with two known compounds, ambuic acid and ambuic acid 18-acetate, were obtained through fermentation of the endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis lespedezae on solid rice medium with 3.5% NaI. Pestallic acids H–Q were undetectable in cultures of the fungus grown on solid rice medium lacking NaI or in those where NaI had been replaced by NaCl or NaBr. The structures of the new metabolites were established on basis of 1D/2D NMR and HRESIMS data. Their absolute configurations were determined by Mosher’s method and TDDFT-ECD calculations. Abstract The present work was carried out to evaluate the microbiological and physicochemical composition of salamis produced with the meat of beef, horse, wild boar and pork. Salami productions occurred under controlled laboratory conditions to exclude butchery environmental contaminations, without the addition of nitrate and nitrite. Nucleotide sequence of a ssRNA phage from Acinetobacter: kinship to coliphages.

The complete nucleotide sequence of ssRNA phage AP205 propagating in Acinetobacter species is reported. The RNA has three large ORFs, which code for the following homologues of the RNA coliphage proteins: the maturation, coat and replicase proteins. Their gene order is the same as that in coliphages. RNA coliphages or Leviviridae fall into two genera: the alloleviviruses, like Qβ, which have a coat read-through protein, and the leviviruses, like MS2, which do not have this coat protein extension. Physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters in a hypereutrophic lagoon (Albufera Lake, Valencia, Spain).

Several physico-chemical parameters related to water quality, as well as saprophytic and public health-related heterotrophic bacterial groups were studied in a hypereutrophic lake (Albufera, Valencia) at different seasons. Total microscopic and viable counts were compared, and, together with faecal indicators, were determined in water samples from different sites. Heterotrophic bacteria grown on nonselective medium were identified to genus level and a diversity index was calculated.
