Use of DNA barcoding in the assignment of commercially valuable fish species from Romania

2017

DNA barcoding is a molecular technique frequently used either for biodiversity monitoring and fish conservation or in the identification of the species of origin for raw and processed food from restaurants or fish markets. The most important aspect of this technique is that it works for all stages of life and can be used to distinguish between closely related taxa. Also, the technique has been used to unmask attempts of frauds in fish markets where more desirable and expensive fish are sometimes substituted with lower valued species. Our study aims to test the utility of the COI barcoding gene in the correct identification of several economically and ecologically valuable fish species, and …

Caratterizzazione del pattern lipidico e degli acidi grassi del muscolo dell’ibrido Acipenser naccarii (Bonaparte, 1836) x A. baerii (Brandt, 1869) e…

2002

Muscle phospholipids and tryglicerides were measured in two sturgeon (Acipenseridae) hybrids. Fatty acid composition of the two lipidic fractions showed a strong similarity between the two hybrids.

Standardization of sperm motility analysis by using CASA-Mot for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and Siberian sturgeo…

2019

[EN] It is essential to define an optimized standard method to assess the fish sperm quality to minimize the differences between the results obtained by different laboratories. Only this optimization and standardization can make them useful from academia to industry. This study presents the validation of sperm motility assessment using a CASA-Mot system for three endangered diadromous fish species: European eel (Anguilla anguilla), Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii). To attain this goal, different technical and data processing methods were tested: 1) magnification lens (×10 and ×20), 2) Spermtrack® reusable chambers (10 and 20¿¿m depth) and 3) different f…

Fatty acid composition of a cultured sturgeon hybrid (×)

2005

Abstract Analyses of fatty acids from the dorsal muscle of Acipenser naccarii  ×  A. baerii sturgeon hybrid were carried out. The data were compared with those reported in the literature for other sturgeons reared for human consumption. This hybrid would seem to be of great nutritional interest, its flesh being more beneficial for human health than those of other cultured sturgeons. In fact, the level of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was very high (34.7 ± 0.67%), being similar to that of monounsaturated fatty acids (37.9 ± 0.83%). Moreover, the PUFAs- n 3/PUFAs- n 6 ratio (6.74) was noticeably higher in this hybrid than in the other cultured sturgeon species. There were also high cont…

Ancient mitochondrial DNA analyses of Iberian sturgeons

2009

Summary Today’s European sturgeons are relics of erstwhile widely distributed populations, diminished mainly by overfishing and habitat changes over the centuries. While extinct European populations in the Baltic and North seas have been identified as Acipenser oxyrhinchus or A. sturio, a clear species determination on the Iberian Peninsula is still lacking. Plans to conserve existing populations and to re-introduce extinct wild populations in European rivers will benefit from information of historic population/genotype composition. In this study, we used techniques involving ancient DNA as well as morphological comparisons based on bony scutes to identify twelve samples from five archaeolo…
