Field of Confluences | Space of Convergences Four religions share one space characterized by pure geometry where beyond being a place of worship the integration and communion of different identities is facilitated. The designed space is the result of the composition of typological fragments from the four main religions: the space associated to Christian and Orthodox religions is characterized by the presence of the apse and the presbytery; the space of the Muslim religion is identified by the presence of the Mihrab while the space of the animist religion is not identified by any specific architectonical or typological element, but foresee spaces where is possible to place worship objects.

Pal. VI 221). Continuità morfologiche e funzionali negli ex voto figurativi

2022

The painted ex-votos are a cult object with a long history. Examples of this type of ex-voto, widely used up to the end of …

«Portavano pitture della disgrazia sofferta». Divagazione sulle continuità e sulle trasformazioni degli exvoto figurativi

2021

Musical activities in Palermo’s convents have so far received little scholarly attention, even though there is ample evidence of their importance. Indeed, in Palermo’s cloisters the promotion of music was able to go beyond architectural divisions and dissolve the conventional boundaries of space. Therefore, music acted as a powerful device of communication between the internal and external dimensions, as well as a means for asserting a social status which nuns and novices didn’t want to give up. However, while on the one hand the expenses for musical activities were recurring, on the other it is not easy to assess the direct contribution of the nuns to the musical practice. On the contrary,…

Chemical and spectroscopic characteristics of the wood of Vitis vinifera cv. Sangiovese affected by esca disease.

2009

Chemical and spectroscopic analyses ((13)C cross-polarization-magic angle spinning NMR and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies) were carried out on the wood of Vitis vinifera cv. Sangiovese with brown-red discoloration and black streaks caused by esca disease. The analyses of the brown-red wood revealed the destruction of hemicelluloses and noncrystalline cellulose as well as modifications in the pectic and ligninic wood fractions. The pectic fraction consisted of carbohydrates associated with polyphenols. The lignin fraction exhibited only a few changes in the aromatic systems and a partial demethylation, and it appeared to be associated with condensed phe…

Identification of Acremonium isolates from grapevines and evaluation of their antagonism towards Plasmopara viticola

2015

Some endophytic fungal genera in Vitis vinifera, including Acremonium, have been reported as antagonists of Plasmopara viticola. Endophytic Acremonium isolates from an asymptomatic grapevine cultivar Inzolia from Italy were identified by morphological features and multigene phylogenies of ITS, 18S and 28S genes, and their intra-specific genomic diversity was analyzed by RAPD analysis. Culture filtrates (CFs) obtained from Acremonium isolates were tested in vitro for their inhibitory activity against the P. viticola sporangia germination. Among 94 isolates, 68 belonged to the Acremonium persicinum and 26 to the Acremonium sclerotigenum. RAPD analysis grouped the A. persicinum isolates into 1…

Sequences of isopenicillin N synthetase genes suggest horizontal gene transfer from prokaryotes to eukaryotes

1990

Evolutionary distances between bacterial and fungal isopenicillin N synthetase (IPNS) genes have been compared to distances between the corresponding 5S rRNA genes. The presence of sequences homologous to the IPNS gene has been examined in DNAs from representative prokaryotic organisms and Ascomycotina. The results of both analyses strongly support two different events of horizontal transfer of the IPNS gene from bacteria to filamentous fungi. This is the first example of such a type of transfer from prokaryotes to eukaryotes.

In this paper we study the role of women in the Phoenician-Pun…

Giacomo Serpotta tra sacro e profano

2022

We shall be taking an innovative and original approach in our examination of the insuperable figure of Giacomo Serpotta, an outstanding Sicilian stucco sculptor of the 18th century. The complete artistic output of Giacomo Serpotta is traced, oscillating between the sacred and the profane in the sculptural adornment of many churches and oratories. Here, Giacomo Serpotta shifts from the Baroque to Rococo, originating a sculptural art that is profoundly innovative in its language and symbology. Formal reading and chromatic-spatial games are intertwined with the symbolic in the light of significant essays by Carl Gustav Jung, Martin Heidegger and Carlo Giulio Argan
