2001

The Long Run Impact of Coordinated Activism Initiated by the Council of the Institutional Investors (CII) on Returns of the Targeted Firms Shares A pension funds money manager faces the following alternative when it holds under-performing shares : either it sells them, or it keeps them and seeks to influence the managers of the firms involved. Several reasons can explain why American pension funds followed the second way. Such a strategy contribute to the development of a practice called shareholder activism. This article focuses particularly on this phenomenon. For this purpose, author describes the various existing practices of activism (proxy targeting and performance targeting). Then, h…

Democratic Legitimacy and the Court of Justice of the European Union

2016

The chapter on democratic legitimacy and the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) focuses on whether the CJEU through judicial activism may be claimed to have established its jurisprudence beyond the bounds of democratic legitimacy. Judicial activism has to a large extent been found in cases concerning the prerogatives of the CJEU, while in relation to other issues, such as the application of fundamental rights, the CJEU has demonstrated political awareness in its use of judicial activism, which however has diminished legal certainty. In general the CJEU has acted within the bounds of democratic legitimacy, but further clarification of its jurisprudence in controversial areas may b…

Who cares about calling non-consensual sex "rape" in summaries of fictional narratives on Wikipedia? From a gender identity hypothesis to recurrent a…

2021

International audience; This presentation is based on a larger research project about novel and film summaries on Wikipedia where a recurrent dissensus as to which word summarizes best what happens in a fictional sex scene (typically seduction vs rape) was spotted by exporting and searching revision histories. The linguistic consistency and recurrence of such words shifts suggests these findings cannot be explained solely by interindividual subjective variation in interpretation and chance : can we predict whether a reader / contributor will make this type of discursive shift on the basis of their social identity, such as their gender ? A methodological difficulty is that identity online an…

A New, Better BET: Rescuing and Revising Basic Emotion Theory

2018

Basic Emotion Theory, or BET, has dominated the affective sciences for decades (Ekman, 1972, 1992, 1999; Ekman and Davidson, 1994; Griffiths, 2013; Scarantino and Griffiths, 2011). It has been highly influential, driving a number of empirical lines of research (e.g., in the context of facial expression detection, neuroimaging studies and evolutionary psychology). Nevertheless, BET has been criticized by philosophers, leading to calls for it to be jettisoned entirely (Colombetti, 2014; Hufendiek, 2016). This paper defuses those criticisms. In addition, it shows that we have good reason to retain BET. Finally, it reviews and puts to rest worries that BET's commitment to affect programs render…

2013

Author's version of an article in the journal: Information Development. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0266666913485260 This article investigates the use of the Internet among Indonesian environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) and how this use influences the mobilizing structure of the environmental movement. The discussion is informed by an explorative study of nineteen Indonesian ENGOs working in the domain of forest protection. The study reveals that the Internet empowers the environmental activism of these organizations by enhancing opportunities for political participation. A main finding in the article is that well-established organization…
