The experimental facility for the Search for Hidden Particles at the CERN SPS

2019

The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has shown that the CERN SPS accelerator with its 400 $\mathrm{\small GeV/c}$ proton beam offers a unique opportunity to explore the Hidden Sector. The proposed experiment is an intensity frontier experiment which is capable of searching for hidden particles through both visible decays and through scattering signatures from recoil of electrons or nuclei. The high-intensity experimental facility developed by the SHiP collaboration is based on a number of key features and developments which provide the possibility of probing a large part of the parameter space for a wide range of models with light long-lived superweakly interacting particles…

The Use of Silicones as Extractants of Biologically Active Substances from Vegetable Raw Materials

2021

Based on theoretical studies, the authors of this paper propose the use of cosmetic organosilicon polymers (commonly called silicones) for the extraction of a complex of biologically active substances contained in vegetable raw materials. It is important to note that the biological molecules do not interact with the organosilicones and, therefore, their properties are not altered after the extraction. In this work, we investigate the efficiency of several polyorganosiloxanes as extractants of vegetable raw materials (Calendula Officialis L. and Artemisia Absinthium L.) useful for the preparation of cosmetic emulsions. Specifically, the extraction studies were conducted by using polyorganosi…

La Vinculación Ciencia-Sociedad: Estereotipos y Nuevos Enfoques

2016

The histone deacetylase Rpd3 regulates the heterochromatin structure of Drosophila telomeres

2011

Telomeres are specialized structures at the end of eukaryotic chromosomes that are required to preserve genome integrity, chromosome stability and nuclear architecture. Telomere maintenance and function are established epigenetically in several eukaryotes. However, the exact chromatin enzymatic modifications regulating telomere homeostasis are poorly understood. In Drosophila melanogaster, telomere length and stability are maintained through the retrotransposition of specialized telomeric sequences and by the specific loading of protecting capping proteins, respectively. Here, we show that the loss of the essential and evolutionarily conserved histone deacetylase Rpd3, the homolog of mammal…

Synthesis and antiproliferative activities of two new analogs of tetrazepinones

Based on the encouraging results, we report the multistep synthesis and the biologicalo results of two new analogs of tetrazepinones: the 3,5-dimethyl-6-phenyl-8-(trifluoromethyl-5,6-dihydropyrazo1o[3-4-f]1,2,35)tetrazepin-4(3H)-one and the 3-(2-chloroethyl)-5-methyl-6-phenyl-8-(trifluoromethyl-5,6-dihydropyrazo1o[3-4-f]1,2,35)tetrazepin-4(3H)-one. Both compounds showed a pro-apoptotic activity against HL60 and K562 resistant cell lines. Flow cytometry studies carried out 0n K562 cells allowed to establish that the methyl derivative induces G0-G1, phase arrest followed by apoptosis, whereas the chloroethyl derivative is a not phase-specific agent.

Learning to associate written letters with speech sounds is crucial for the initial phase of acquiring reading skills. However, little is known about the cortical reorganization for supporting letter-speech sound learning, particularly the brain dynamics during the learning of grapheme-phoneme associations. In the present study, we trained 30 Finnish participants (mean age: 24.33 years, SD: 3.50 years) to associate novel foreign letters with familiar Finnish speech sounds on two consecutive days (first day ~ 50 min; second day ~ 25 min), while neural activity was measured using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Two sets of audiovisual stimuli were used for the training in which the graphe…

New insights into the bioactivity of cucurbitacins

2005

The cucurbitacins are a group of tetracyclic triterpenoids derived from the cucurbitane skeleton and found primarily in the Cucurbitaceae family. These triterpenoids, present in free or glycosidic form, are generally responsible for the bitter taste of the plants that contain them and are probably the principal cause of the antifeedant effects observed for such plants. Several plants used in traditional medicine to treat both inflammatory diseases as well as various types of tumors are rich in cucurbitacins, a fact which has given rise to several studies concerning their potential use as anti-inflammatory and anticancer agents. Nevertheless, since many cucurbitacins are extremely toxic, rel…

ChemInform Abstract: Synthesis and Reactivity of New β-Enamino Acid Derivatives: A Simple and General Approach to β-Enamino Esters and Thioesters.

2010

A new strategy has been developed for the synthesis of several β-enamino acid derivatives. N,N‘-Carbonyldiimidazole has been used as C-acylating agent of methyl ketimines, providing a direct and simple route to new β-enamino carbonyl imidazole derivatives 2. These derivatives 2 were cleanly and efficiently transformed into β-enamino esters 4 (X = O) and thioesters 4 (X = S) by reaction with a great variety of alcohols and thiols, including tertiary ones. Alternative and complementary routes to compounds 4 were also investigated. In addition, β-keto esters 6 have been obtained by mild acid hydrolysis of β-enamino esters 4.

Multidrug resistance reverting activity and antitumor profile of new phenothiazine derivatives

2008

Abstract A series of easily affordable phenothiazine derivatives bearing a rigid but-2-ynyl amino side chain were synthesized and tested to evaluate the MDR reverting activity and full antitumor profile. Some compounds endowed with remarkable MDR reverting effect were identified, and the most active one ( 6c ) was shown to increase doxorubicin retention in multidrug resistant cells, suggesting a direct interaction with P-glycoprotein. Furthermore, a broad range of cellular activities were observed for different compounds. In particular, the ability of some derivatives to induce antiproliferative effects on resistant cell lines and to interfere with the G 1 phase of the cell cycle, a phase u…
