The skeletal isomerization of but-1-ene catalyzed by theta-1 zeolite

2001

The complete mechanism for the skeletal isomerization of but-1-ene catalyzed by theta-1 zeolite was investigated theoretically by means of DFT calculations, and the influence of the local geometry of the active site and of electrostatic effects on the geometries of the species involved and on activation and reaction energies were analyzed. It was found that whereas the geometry and stability of alkoxide intermediates are strongly influenced by the local geometry of the active site, the ionic transition states are mainly stabilized by electrostatic effects. Both aspects result in a lowering of the activation energies of the elementary steps that form the mechanism and therefore in enhanced r…

Antioxidation and the Hypoxic Ventilatory Response

2012

Reactive oxygen species favor the reductive state of iron. Antioxidation, by depleting biologically active ferrous iron, could then have a stabilizing effect, akin to hypoxia, on HIF-1α; the process which controls the genetic responses to hypoxia. However, the influence of antioxidation on the hypoxic ventilatory responses (HVR) is unclear. In this study we set out to determine the influence of mangiferin, a natural polyphenolic compound present in mango trees, with strong antioxidant and iron chelating properties, on the HVR. The study was performed in awake Wistar rats. Acute HVR to 12% and 8% FiO2 before and 40 min after mangiferin (300 mg/kg, i.p.) pretreatment were recorded plethysmogr…

Contact probe voltammetry for in situ monitoring of the reactivity of phenolic tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) compounds with ROS

2015

The application of an in situ electrochemical contact probe methodology for monitoring reactivity of antioxidant polyphenolic compounds in tomato fruits is described. Upon electrochemical generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), characteristic voltammetric responses were recorded for compounds resulting from the reaction of such species with tomato compounds. This suggests that new electrochemically oxidizable compounds are generated from the oxidation of highly reactive polyphenolic compounds with ROS. Therefore, an evaluation of the antioxidant capacity of such species could be made from voltammetric data for different tomato varieties.

Cyclic Analogs of Desferrioxamine E Siderophore for 68Ga Nuclear Imaging: Coordination Chemistry and Biological Activity in Staphylococcus aureus

2021

As multidrug-resistant bacteria are an emerging problem and threat to humanity, novel strategies for treatment and diagnostics are actively sought. We aim to utilize siderophores, iron-specific strong chelating agents produced by microbes, as gallium ion carriers for diagnosis, applying that Fe(III) can be successfully replaced by Ga(III) without losing biological properties of the investigated complex, which allows molecular imaging by positron emission tomography (PET). Here, we report synthesis, full solution chemistry, thermodynamic characterization, and the preliminary biological evaluation of biomimetic derivatives (FOX) of desferrioxamine E (FOXE) siderophore, radiolabeled with 68Ga …

Reversing agriculture from intensive to sustainable improves soil quality in a semiarid South Italian soil

2010

Intensive agriculture (IA) is widespread in South Italy, although it requires frequent tillage, large amounts of fertilizers and irrigation water. We have assessed the efficacy of reversing IA to sustainable agriculture (SA) in recovering quality of a typical South Italy soil (Lithic Haploxeralf). This reversion, lasting from 2000 to 2007, replaced 75% of nutrients formerly supplied inorganically by farmyard manuring and reduced the tillage frequency. Several chemical and biochemical properties, functionally related to C and N mineralisation–immobilisation processes and to P and S nutrient cycles, were monitored annually from 2005 to 2007 in the spring. Reversing IA to SA decreased soil bul…

Density functional theory study of the 5-pyrrolidin-2-yltetrazole-catalyzed aldol reaction

2005

Abstract The replacement of the carboxylic acid functionality with a tetrazolic acid in the proline-catalyzed asymmetric aldol reaction between acetone and trimethylacetaldehyde has been studied using DFT methods at the B3LYP/6-31G** computational level. For the C–C bond-formation step, four reactive channels corresponding to the syn and anti arrangement of the enamine and the re and si attack modes have been analyzed. The B3LYP/6-31G** results allowed us to explain the stereoselectivity and the increase in reactivity relative to the proline-catalyzed process in DMSO.

Receptors for Nucleotides

2012

Recognition and activation of nucleotides by polyammonium receptors constitute an important target in supramolecular chemistry since the very beginning of this field. Nucleotides have three components: (i) the polyphosphate chain, (ii) the sugar moiety, and (iii) the nucleobase, which permit their multipoint binding through attractions between opposite charges, hydrogen bonding, π-stacking, CH–π interactions, and so on. In this chapter, different receptors for nucleotides, most but not all of them consisting polyamines, are examined, focusing on their molecular structure that enables different binding modes to be operated. Also, a number of examples of nucleotide binding through metal compl…

Reactivity of CuI and CuBr toward Dialkyl Sulfides RSR: From Discrete Molecular Cu I S and Cu I S Clusters to Luminescent Copper(I) Coordination Pol…

2015

The 1D coordination polymer (CP) [(Me2S)3{Cu2(μ-I)2}]n (1) is formed when CuI reacts with SMe2 in n-heptane, whereas in acetonitrile (MeCN), the reaction forms exclusively the 2D CP [(Me2S)3{Cu4(μ-I)4}]n (2) containing “flower-basket” Cu4I4 units. The reaction product of CuI with MeSEt is also solvent-dependent, where the 1D polymer [(MeSEt)2{Cu4(μ3-I)2(μ2-I)2}(MeCN)2]n (3) containing “stepped-cubane” Cu4I4 units is isolated in MeCN. In contrast, the reaction in n-heptane affords the 1D CP [(MeSEt)3{Cu4(μ3-I)4}]n (4) containing “closed-cubane” Cu4I4 clusters. The reaction of MeSPr with CuI provides the structurally related 1D CP [(MeSPr)3{Cu4(μ3-I)4}]n (5), for which the X-ray structure has…

Anionic Monosubstituted Cyclopentadienylsamarium Derivatives: Catalysts for a Stereospecific Isoprene Polymerization

1998

New alkyl and allyl complexes 1–3 {1: [Cp′2Sm(C3H5)]n, Cp′ = Me3CC5H4; 2: [Me4C2(C5H4)2]Sm(C3H5)2Li(dme),dme = (CH3OCH2CH2OCH3); 3: Cp′2SmMe2Li(dioxane)} were synthesized from (Cp′2SmCl)2and from the magnesium derivative [Me4C2(C5H4)2]SmCl · MgCl2(THF)4 (4). The ansa anionic complex 2 exhibited good activity for the stereospecific 1,4-trans polymerization of isoprene, whereas the neutral derivative 1 was inactive. In the same way, the anionic complex [Cp′2SmMe2]Li(dioxane) (3) was found to be an ethylene polymerization catalyst of very short lifetime. The lack of reactivity of 1 is related to the associated structure of this coordinatively unsaturated complex: this fact was established by t…
