Associations Between Trajectories of Leisure-Time Physical Activity and Television Viewing Time Across Adulthood: The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Fi…

2018

Background: The purpose of this study was to examine trajectories of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and television-viewing (TV) time and their associations in adults over 10 years. Methods: The sample comprised 2934 participants (men, 46.0%) aged 24–39 years in 2001 and they were followed up for 10 years. LTPA and TV time were assessed using self-report questionnaires in 2001, 2007, and 2011. Longitudinal LTPA and TV-time trajectories and their interactions were analyzed with mixture modeling. Results: Three LTPA (persistently highly active, 15.8%; persistently moderately active, 60.8%; and persistently low active, 23.5%) and 4 TV time (consistently low, 38.6%; consistently moderate,…

Stability and prediction of physical activity in 5-, 10-, and 28-year follow-up studies among industrial employees.

2006

The aim of the study was to examine the stability of voluntary and household physical activity (PA) and to compare it with that of the use of the most common stimulants. The prospective cohort study comprised of follow-ups at 5, 10, and 28 years at baseline in 1973 in four plants of an industrial corporation in Finland. A systematic, non-proportional sample (n=902, age range 18-64 years) stratified for age, gender, and occupational status was drawn from the employees. Scores of PA were based on a questionnaire and interviews. Logistic regression models with proportional odds assumptions were counted. The 5-year stability (Spearman's rho) of PA time was 0.44 (PA intensity 0.44), the respecti…

Diet Macronutrient Composition, Physical Activity, and Body Composition in Soldiers During 6 Months Deployment

2018

Abstract Introduction Optimal diet together with good physical fitness maintains readiness and military performance during longer deployments. The purpose of this study was to describe changes in dietary macronutrient and energy intake, total physical activity and body composition during a 6-month deployment in South Lebanon. Furthermore, associations of diet macronutrient intake and physical activity on body composition were also studied. Materials and Methods Forty male soldiers kept a 3-day food diary and their body composition was measured via bioimpedance and ultrasonography. Total physical activity was evaluated by accelerometers in a subgroup of participants. Measurements were conduc…

Different Transcriptional Activity and In Vitro TNF-α Production in Psoriasis Patients Carrying the TNF-α 238A Promoter Polymorphism

2000

Genes encoded on chromosome 6 within the major histocompatibility complex region are thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. A potential candidate gene is tumor necrosis factor alpha. The tumor necrosis factor alpha promoter contains several polymorphisms including two G--A transitions at position -308 and -238, which are the most common in Caucasian populations. The TNF238.2 (-238A) allele has been strongly associated with psoriasis. We have investigated the effect of the -238 and -308 variants on transcription of the tumor necrosis factor alpha gene in luciferase reporter gene assays. In addition, peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 47 patients with psoriasis…

Study of the habits and food waste production of young university students.

2020

Neural Architecture of Selective Stopping Strategies: Distinct Brain Activity Patterns Are Associated with Attentional Capture But Not with Outright …

2017

In stimulus-selective stop-signal tasks, the salient stop signal needs attentional processing before genuine response inhibition is completed. Differential prefrontal involvement in attentional capture and response inhibition has been linked to the right inferior frontal junction (IFJ) and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC), respectively. Recently, it has been suggested that stimulus-selective stopping may be accomplished by the following different strategies: individuals may selectively inhibit their response only upon detecting a stop signal (independent discriminate then stop strategy) or unselectively whenever detecting a stop or attentional capture signal (stop then discriminate s…

Release of premotor activity after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of prefrontal cortex

2008

In the present study we aimed to explore by means of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) the reciprocal influences between prefrontal cortex (PFC) and premotor cortex (PMC). Subjects were asked to observe on a computer monitor different pictures representing manipulations of different kind of tools. They had to produce a movement (go condition) or to keep the resting position (no-go condition) at the appearance of different cue signals represented by different colors shown alternatively on the hands manipulating the tools or on the picture background. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were collected at the offset of the visual stimuli before and after a 10 minute, 1 Hz rTMS tra…

COMT genotype predicts BOLD signal and noise characteristics in prefrontal circuits.

2006

Abstract Objective: Prefrontal dopamine (DA) is catabolized by the COMT (catechol- O -methyltransferase) enzyme. Literature suggests that the Val/Met single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the COMT gene predicts executive cognition in humans with Val carriers showing poorer performance due to less available synaptic DA. Recent fMRI studies are thought to agree with these studies having demonstrated prefrontal hyperactivation during n -back and attention-requiring tasks. This was interpreted as “less efficient” processing due to impaired signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of neuronal activity. However, electrophysiological studies of neuronal SNR in primates and humans imply that prefrontal cortex…

The Morquio A Clinical Assessment Program: Baseline results illustrating progressive, multisystemic clinical impairments in Morquio A subjects

2013

Abstract Objectives The objectives of this study are to quantify endurance and respiratory function and better characterize spectrum of symptoms and biochemical abnormalities in mucopolysaccharidosis IVA subjects. Methods MorCAP was a multicenter, multinational, cross sectional study amended to be longitudinal in 2011. Each study visit required collection of medical history, clinical assessments, and keratan sulfate (KS) levels. Results Data from the first visit of 325 subjects (53% female) were available. Mean age was 14.5 years. Mean ± SD height z-scores were − 5.6 ± 3.1 as determined by the CDC growth charts. Mean ± SD from the 6-minute-walk-test was 212.6 ± 152.2 m, revealing limitation…

Longitudinal analysis of endurance and respiratory function from a natural history study of Morquio A syndrome

2015

Objectives: Baseline data from the Morquio A Clinical Assessment Program (MorCAP) revealed that individuals with Morquio A syndrome show substantial impairment in multiple domains including endurance and respiratory function (Harmatz et al., Mol Genet Metab, 2013). Here, 1- and 2-year longitudinal endurance and respiratory function data are presented. Methods: Endurance was assessed using the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and the 3-minute stair climb test (3MSCT). Respiratory function was evaluated by measuring forced vital capacity (PVC) and maximum voluntary ventilation (MW). Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANCOVA models. Annualized estimates of change were determined using model es…
