Thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA) are a group of clinical syndromes associated with haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia and organ dysfunction, mainly renal or neurological. They are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, so early diagnosis and treatment are essential. In this article we report two cases of TMA; a patient with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and a patient with atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome (aHUS).

There are some patients developing haemostatic abnormalities during their infection with a considerably increased risk of death. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has recently been developed to detect antibodies against the von Willebrand factor-cleaving protease ADAMTS13 in patients with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). The ELISA is based on incubation of plasma with immobilized recombinant ADAMTS13 followed by visualization of IgG and IgM antibodies by means of secondary enzyme-labeled antibodies [1]. In a recent study, anti-ADAMTS13 IgG antibodies were detected in most patients with TTP (97%) characterized by severe ADAMTS13 deficiency (< 10% of normal) [1]. The beneficial effects of statin therapy in the reduction of cardiovascular pathogenesis, atherosclerosis, and diabetic complications are well known. The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) plays an important role in the progression of these diseases. In contrast, soluble forms of RAGE act as decoys for RAGE ligands and may prevent the development of RAGE-mediated disorders. Soluble forms of RAGE are either produced by alternative splicing [endogenous secretory RAGE (esRAGE)] or by proteolytic shedding mediated by metalloproteinases [shed RAGE (sRAGE)]. Progeny of “Sir Thaddeus” (1897), a less known essay by literary critic Cezary Jellenta [Napoleon Hirszband], presents an interesting attempt to discern and estimate novels of the 19th century Polish realists as originated from the great Mickiewicz’s poem. According to Jellenta, there are several social, national or aesthetic parallels existing between this famous epic work – a kind of architext and paradigm of Polish culture in general – and the well-known texts by Prus, Orzeszkowa, Sienkiewicz, Konopnicka or Witkiewicz, as well the unknown novel of Galician writer Alfred Nossig. Herbicidal activity of phosphonic, phosphinic, and phosphonous acid analogues of phenylglycine and phenylalanine

A series of phosphonic, phosphinic, and phosphonous acid analogues of phenylglycine and phenylalanine was synthesized and tested as herbicides against Lepidium sativum and Cucumis sativus. Aminobenzylphosphonic acids exhibited notable herbicidal activity and thus represent a group of the most active herbicides found among aminophosphonic acids.
