Prediction of harmful variants on mitochondrial genes : Test of habitat-dependent and demographic effects in a euryhaline fish

2017

Both effective population size and life history may influence the efficacy of purifying selection, but it remains unclear if the environment affects the accumulation of weakly deleterious nonsynonymous polymorphisms. We hypothesize that the reduced energetic cost of osmoregulation in brackish water habitat may cause relaxation of selective constraints at mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) genes. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed 57 complete mitochondrial genomes of Pungitius pungitius collected from brackish and freshwater habitats. Based on inter- and intraspecific comparisons, we estimated that 84% and 68% of the nonsynonymous polymorphisms in the freshwater and brackish …

Psychological variables and temporomandibular disorders: distress, coping, and personality.

2004

Abstract Objective This study analyzes the psychological variables of distress, personality, and coping that are related to the diagnosis based on the Research Diagnostic Criteria for temporomandibular disorder. Study design An age and sex-matched controlled study conducted with a convenience sample (n = 89) in a tertiary care facility. Results The MANCOVA between the muscular (n = 47), articular (n = 42), and control groups (n = 100) showed that the muscular group differed from the control group, obtaining higher levels of distress, anxiety, and depression, and minor use of positive reinterpretation and humor as coping strategies; the articular group also showed higher distress, less posit…

Mechanical loading influences the lumbar intervertebral disc. A cross-sectional study in 308 athletes and 71 controls.

2020

There is evidence in animal populations that loading and exercise can positively impact the intervertebral disc (IVD). However, there is a paucity of information in humans. We examined the lumbar IVDs in 308 young athletes across six sporting groups (baseball, swimming, basketball, kendo, soccer, and running; mean age 19 years) and 71 nonathletic controls. IVD status was quantified via the ratio of IVD to vertebral body height (IVD hypertrophy) and ratio of signal intensity in the nucleus to that in the annulus signal (IVD nucleus hydration) on sagittal T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. P values were adjusted via the false discovery rate method to mitigate false positives. In examinin…

RIED. Revista iberoamericana de educación a distancia

2015

"Listening to you, I get the music”: The Who, "Tommy" i forma opery rockowej

2017

Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą częściowej analizy podgatunku muzycznego opery rockowej na podstawie tekstu Tommy grupy The Who.

‘The best guess for the future?’ Teachers’ adaptation to open and flexible learning environments in Finland

2021

Finnish education has recently experienced reforms with respect to guidelines forming the curriculum framework for basic education and school architecture. Since 2016, all new schools incorporate open and flexible design, at least to some extent. The more open school design challenges the conventional organisation of space and pre-defined structures and interaction practices. This study investigates how teachers both adapt and are affected by new demands for pedagogy, team teaching and teacher-student relationships. Interview data of 21 teachers of six modern schools are reviewed through thematic analysis. The new school layouts provided some incongruence with the teachers’ aims and their p…

Modulation of plasticity of the soleus area of the motor cortex using paired associative stimulation

2015

Paired associative stimulation (PAS) repeatedly combines single somatosensory nerve stimuli with single transcranial magnetic stimuli to induce bidirectional changes in the excitability of the cortical projections to the target muscle. PAS and motor training have been shown to share common neural mechanisms, suggesting that PAS tests functionally relevant neuronal circuits. While PAS has been used extensively to target the hand area of the motor cortex, few studies have targeted the leg area of the motor cortex. The optimal interstimulus inter- val (ISI) to induce plasticity in the cortical projections to lower limbs is still not well established. Thus, the first purpose of this thesis was …

Evolutionary Dynamics of Pathoadaptation Revealed by Three Independent Acquisitions of the VirB/D4 Type IV Secretion System in Bartonella

2017

The α-proteobacterial genus Bartonella comprises a group of ubiquitous mammalian pathogens that are studied as a model for the evolution of bacterial pathogenesis. Vast abundance of two particular phylogenetic lineages of Bartonella had been linked to enhanced host adaptability enabled by lineage-specific acquisition of a VirB/D4 type IV secretion system (T4SS) and parallel evolution of complex effector repertoires. However, the limited availability of genome sequences from one of those lineages as well as other, remote branches of Bartonella has so far hampered comprehensive understanding of how the VirB/D4 T4SS and its effectors called Beps have shaped Bartonella evolution. Here, we repor…
