The rates of co-occurring behavioural addictions in treatment-seeking individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a preliminary report

Objectives: To assess the rates of co-occurring putative ‘behavioural addictions’ in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Methods: Twenty-three international centres specialising in the treatment of OCD were invited to participate in a survey of the rates of behavioural addictions and other relevant comorbidity within their samples. Results: Sixteen of 23 (69.6%) invited centres from 13 countries had sufficient data to participate in the survey. The use of validated diagnostic tools was discrepant, with most centres relying on a ‘clinical diagnosis’ to diagnose behavioural addictions. Data obtained from wastewater analysis can provide rapid and complementary insights in illicit drug consumption at community level. Within Europe, Spain is an important country of transit of both cocaine and cannabis. The quantity of seized drugs and prevalence of their use rank Spain at the top of Europe. Hence, the implementation of a wastewater monitoring program at national level would help to get better understanding of spatial differences and trends in use of illicit drugs. The chapter discusses the main concepts related to addiction and its diagnosis. The definition of addiction and diagnostic criteria for substance and behavior addiction will be discussed. Formal criteria enabling professional treatment and social understanding of the phenomenon are important for systematising knowledge and clearly presenting the profiles of addicts. Przeprowadzono badania w celu sprawdzenia, w jaki sposób modele psychologiczne są w stanie wyjaśnić zjawisko agresji mężczyzn, którzy zażywają narkotyków, sterydów lub nie stosują takich substancji. Próbka mężczyzn (N = 131) została wybrana celowo pod względem uzależnienia od substancji, stosowania sterydów i bycia wolnego od substancji.
