Oxidation of polyolefins by ultraviolet/visible irradiation is a significant limitation for their use in several technological applications. The use of high-tech additives such as silicon microparticles becomes a compositing strategy that can improve the performance of these materials at long-term service conditions. Boron doping of silicon rich carbides: Electrical properties

Boron doped multilayers based on silicon carbide/silicon rich carbide, aimed at the formation of silicon nanodots for photovoltaic applications, are studied. X-ray diffraction confirms the formation of crystallized Si and 3C-SiC nanodomains. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy indicates the occurrence of remarkable interdiffusion between adjacent layers. However, the investigated material retains memory of the initial dopant distribution. Electrical measurements suggest the presence of an unintentional dopant impurity in the intrinsic SiC matrix. Forecasting time series with missing data using Holt's model

This paper deals with the prediction of time series with missing data using an alternative formulation for Holt's model with additive errors. This formulation simplifies both the calculus of maximum likelihood estimators of all the unknowns in the model and the calculus of point forecasts. In the presence of missing data, the EM algorithm is used to obtain maximum likelihood estimates and point forecasts. Based on this application we propose a leave-one-out algorithm for the data transformation selection problem which allows us to analyse Holt's model with multiplicative errors. Some numerical results show the performance of these procedures for obtaining robust forecasts.
Extended quasi-additivity of Tsallis entropies

We consider statistically independent non-identical subsystems with different entropic indices q1 and q2. A relation between q1, q2 and q' (for the entire system) extends a power law for entropic index as a function of distance r. A few examples illustrate a role of the proposed constraint q' < min(q1, q2) for the Beck's concept of quasi-additivity.
Multiple smoothing parameters selection in additive regression quantiles

We propose an iterative algorithm to select the smoothing parameters in additive quantile regression, wherein the functional forms of the covariate effects are unspecified and expressed via B-spline bases with difference penalties on the spline coefficients. The proposed algorithm relies on viewing the penalized coefficients as random effects from the symmetric Laplace distribution, and it turns out to be very efficient and particularly attractive with multiple smooth terms. Triply Factorised Groups and the Structure of Skew Left Braces

The algebraic structure of skew left brace has proved to be useful as a source of set-theoretic solutions of the Yang–Baxter equation. We study in this paper the connections between left and right $$\pi $$ -nilpotency and the structure of finite skew left braces. We also study factorisations of skew left braces and their impact on the skew left brace structure. As a consequence of our study, we define a Fitting-like ideal of a left brace. Our approach depends strongly on a description of a skew left brace in terms of a triply factorised group obtained from the action of the multiplicative group of the skew left brace on its additive group.
Optimal designs for a one-way layout with covariates

Abstract For the general class of Φ q -criteria optimal designs are characterized which reflect the inherent symmetry in a one-way layout with covariates. In particular, the eigenvalues of the covariance matrices are related to those in suitably chosen marginal models depending on the underlying interaction structure.
Efficiency Bounds for Product Designs in Linear Models

We provide lower efficiency bounds for the best product design for an additive multifactor linear model. The A-optimality criterion is used to demonstrate that out bounds are better than the conventional bounds. Applications to other criteria, such as IMSE (integrated mean squared error) criterion are also indicated. In all the cases, the best product design appears to perform better when there are more levels in each factor but decreases when more factors are included. Explicit efficiency formulas for non-additive models are also constructed.
A comparison of nonparametric methods in the graduation of mortality: Application to data from the Valencia Region (Spain)

[EN] The nonparametric graduation of mortality data aims to estimate death rates by carrying out a smoothing of the crude rates obtained directly from original data. The main difference with regard to parametric models is that the assumption of an age-dependent function is unnecessary, which is advantageous when the information behind the model is unknown, as one cause of error is often the choice of an inappropriate model. This paper reviews the various alternatives and presents their application to mortality data from the Valencia Region, Spain.
