Confounding factors of transvaginal ultrasound accuracy in endometrial cancer.
2020
Endometrial cancer is the most frequently diagnosed gynecological tumour. Transvaginal ultrasound has a leading role in the preoperative evaluation of endometrial cancer patients. The study aimed to identify factors that can worsen the diagnostic accuracy of transvaginal ultrasound in endometrial cancer patients. We retrospectively analysed 290 patients with histological diagnosis of endometrial adenocarcinoma. Two-dimensional (2D) gray-scale ultrasound and power Doppler imaging were performed. Age, menopause status, obesity, parity, Figo stage and benign uterine disorders were evaluated as possible factors worsening the diagnostic accuracy of the ultrasonography. FIGO stage IB was the main…
Tumor Vascularity—A Novel Prognostic Factor in Advanced Cervical Carcinoma
1995
Objective: In the search for the optimal treatment of advanced cervical cancer, the identification of valid prognostic factors obtainable without histopathologic investigation of the entire tumor and the locoregional lymph nodes is of paramount interest. Tumor microvessel density has recently been demonstrated to correlate strongly with disease aggressiveness in breast cancer and other malignancies. Methods: We established a computerized image analysis system to quantify tumor microvascularity by using the closest-individual method, which determines the distribution of distances from random points within the tumor to the closest microvessel (DTCMV). Tumor microvascularity was assessed in pa…
Ballon occlusion of the renal artery in tumor nephrectomy.
1975
AbstractA method of preoperative intraluminal occlusion of the renal artery in cases of kidney tumors using a 5F Swan-Ganz balloon catheter is presented. The procedure was used in 26 tumor nephrectomies without complications and resulted in marked facilitation of the operation in 70 per cent of the cases.
Cisplatin and vinorelbine in advanced and/or metastatic adenocarcinoma of the endometrium: a new highly active chemotherapeutic regimen.
2001
Summary Purpose To date the systemic treatment of recurrent and/or metastatic adenocarcinoma of the endometrium (EAC), using both chemotherapy and hormonotherapy (HT), is far from satisfactory. The significant activity of vinorelbine (VNR), a relatively new semisynthetic vinca alkaloid, demonstrated in advanced breast cancer, bronchial adenocarcinoma, and in head and neck cancer, prompted us to carry out a phase II trial employing the combination of cisplatin and VNR in a pluri-institutional series of patients with recurrent and/or metastatic EAC. Patients and methods Thirty-five patients affected by recurrent and/or metastatic EAC have been treated with CDDP 80 mg/m2 on day 1 plus VNR 25 m…
Radical vaginal trachelectomy (RVT) combined with laparoscopic lymphadenectomy: Prospective study of 225 patients with early-stage cervical cancer
2011
Objective: The aim of the study was to prove the surgical and oncological safety of radical vaginal trachelectomy (RVT) and laparoscopic lymphadenectomy for patients with early-stage cervical cancer who are seeking parenthood. Methods: A database of 225 patients with early-stage cervical cancer and intention to treat by RVT after laparoscopic lymphadenectomy was prospectively maintained. A total of 212 patients were treated according to the protocol. The procedure was preformed in a standardized manner, and life table analysis was applied. Results: In the cohort of patients treated according to protocol, 8 recurrences occurred and 4 patients died from recurrence. The median follow-up time w…
Laparoscopic Sentinel Lymph Node Detection After Hysteroscopic Injection of Technetium-99 in Patients With Endometrial Cancer
2015
Background and Objectives Endometrial cancer (EC) has an increasing incidence worldwide. Despite the unequivocal prognostic importance of nodal status, systematic lymphadenectomy is associated to elevated morbidity. Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is designed to avoid extensive nodal dissection and provide crucial oncologic information. The goal of this prospective study was to determine the feasibility, safety, and accuracy of laparoscopic SLN biopsy in EC obtained through hysteroscopic injection of technetium-99 (Tc-99). Methods From January 2008 to December 2012, a total of 42 women with EC were included in the study. We injected 20 mBq of Tc-99 hysteroscopically underneath the tumor mi…
Laparoscopic aortic lymphadenectomy in left-sided inferior vena cava
2020
Transposition of the inferior vena cava (IVC), also known as left-sided IVC (LS-IVC), is a rare congenital variant which results from regression of the right supracardinal vein and persistence of the left supracardinal vein in embryonic development.[1 2][1] LS-IVC occurs in 0.2–0.5% of the general
Docetaxel plus prednisone in patients with metastatic hormone-refractory prostate cancer: An Italian clinical experience
2011
Aims and Background: We investigated the efficacy of docetaxel plus prednisone in Italian patients with metastatic hormone- refractory prostate cancer (mHRPC). Methods: Twenty four patients with mHRPC received docetaxel 75 mg/m2 every 3 weeks plus prednisone 5 mg twice daily for up to six cycles. The primary endpoint was efficacy measured by a reduction in serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels and measurable disease. Evaluation of toxicity, quality of life and reduction of pain were secondary endpoints. Results: PSA response was seen in 18 patients (75%). We observed a partial response in 2 patients (8.3%), stable disease in 10 patients (41.7%), and disease progression in 12 patients…
Anti-cancer activity of di- and tri-organotin(IV) compounds with D-(+)-Galacturonic acid on human tumor cells
2018
Abstract We have compared the anti-proliferative activity in vitro, of R2SnGala (1-3) [R = Me, n-Bu, Ph] and novel R3SnGala (4, 5) [R = Me, n-Bu] with D-(+)-Galacturonic acid [HGala; Galaq-, q = (2) and (1) for R2SnGala and R3SnGala, respectively] compounds, towards human tumor cell lines of intestinal carcinoma (HCT-116) and breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7). The new synthesized 4 and 5 compounds were characterized, in solution, by 1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR, that showed that HGala acts as monoanionic moiety and evidenced the dynamic behavior of the compounds, due to inter-conversions involving the anomeric carbon atom of the ligand. Cell viability, apoptosis induction and cell cycle distribution w…
GSK-3? Can Regulate the Sensitivity of MIA-PaCa-2 Pancreatic and MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cells to Chemotherapeutic Drugs, Targeted Therapeutics and Nutra…
2021
Glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) is a regulator of signaling pathways. KRas is frequently mutated in pancreatic cancers. The growth of certain pancreatic cancers is KRas-dependent and can be suppressed by GSK-3 inhibitors, documenting a link between KRas and GSK-3. To further elucidate the roles of GSK-3β in drug-resistance, we transfected KRas-dependent MIA-PaCa-2 pancreatic cells with wild-type (WT) and kinase-dead (KD) forms of GSK-3β. Transfection of MIA-PaCa-2 cells with WT-GSK-3β increased their resistance to various chemotherapeutic drugs and certain small molecule inhibitors. Transfection of cells with KD-GSK-3β often increased therapeutic sensitivity. An exception was observed wi…
