Properties of sea urchin coelomocyte agglutinins

We examined some biological activities of a 200-kDa glycoprotein, referred to as Paracentrotus lividus vitellogenin, contained both in the coelomic fluid and in a subpopulation of coelomocytes called «colourless spherula cells». Cell-free coelomic fluid, coelomocyte lysate and supernatant obtained after coelomocyte washings were assayed for hemagglutinating activity. All samples agglutinated rabbit erythrocytes in a calcium-dependent way. The comparison between the electrophoretic patterns of erythrocyte lysates, before and after incubation with the coelomic fluid, revealed that a 200-kDa band was obtained from membranes of agglutinated erythrocytes. Microcirculatory Dysfunction Induced by Cigarette Smoking

This review deals with the deleterious effects of cigarette smoking on the microcirculation, both in terms of morphological (i.e., vessel wall injury, capillary loss) and functional aspects. The latter concerns predominantly changes in tissue perfusion and its regulatory mechanisms (i.e., reactive hyperemia, sequestration of blood cells in the microcirculation). The mechanisms of action of cigarette smoking on the microcirculation include compromised endothelial-dependent vasorelaxation, platelet aggregation, endothelial cell dysfunction, and the activation of circulating leukocytes. Structure and mechanical properties of Al–B composite powder

Abstract Al-B composite powder has been obtained by crushing pieces of composite material presenting industrial waste. Structural peculiarities and microhardness of separate powder particles (d∼1 mm) have been investigated. Original design of high precision microhardness tester made it possible to detect the properties of powder both in near-surface layer and below it. The powder represents a new structurally non-homogenous material with the increased microhardness (1.5 GPa) which grows up to 4 GPa in near-surface layers. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a powerful technique which is commonly used to image surfaces at the nanoscale and single-molecule level, as well as to investigate physical properties of the sample surface using a technique known as force spectroscopy. In this chapter, we review our recent research where we used AFM to investigate physical properties of phospholipid monolayers, bilayers, and cell membranes. One autapomorphic character restricted to all Metazoa including Porifera [sponges] is the existence of transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs). In this study we screened for molecules from one subfamily within the superfamily of the insulin receptors.
