Effects of pulsed high-frequency electromagnetic fields on the neuroendocrine system.

The influence of pulsed high-frequency electromagnetic fields emitted from a circularly polarized antenna on the neuroendocrine system in healthy humans was investigated (900 MHz electromagnetic field, pulsed with 217 Hz, average power density 0.02 mW/cm<sup>2</sup>). Nocturnal hormone profiles of growth hormone (GH), cortisol, luteinizing hormone (LH) and melatonin were determined under polysomnographic control. An alteration in the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis activity was found with a slight, transient elevation in the cortisol serum level immediately after onset of field exposure which persisted for 1 h. Prediction of diabetes mellitus induced by steroid overtreatment in adrenal insufficiency

AbstractTo assess the differences between patients with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) and prediabetes/diabetes mellitus (DM) in secondary adrenal insufficiency (SAI). We cross-sectionally evaluated 102, out of a total of 140, patients with SAI, who were on hydrocortisone (HC) (n = 50) and cortisone acetate (n = 52) replacement therapy. Clinical, anthropometric, and metabolic parameters were compared in patients with NGT (n = 60) and DM (n = 42). Imaging of the adrenals by endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a valuable technique for detection and localization of adrenal lesions, but endosonomorphological tumor distinction remains difficult. In this single-center study, the amount of blood flow in common adrenal lesions, such as adrenal adenomas, adrenal hyperplasia, and pheochromocytomas, was visualized by color-coded duplex EUS (CD-EUS) and was retrospectively analysed. Therefore, we reviewed our EUS database to evaluate and correlate the perfusion patterns of common adrenal lesions with histologically confirmed diagnosis, possible malignancy, and endosonomorphological features such as echogeneity, echostructure, and tumor size. Defective apoptosis as potential mechanism in the tumorogenesis of myelolipoma

Apoptosis is considered an important mechanism of selective deletion that occurs during hematopoiesis. Myelolipoma is a rare benign tumor composed of adipose tissue and hematopoietic cells. The pathogenesis of this benign tumor is still unclear. Analysing the structural levels and apoptosis of normal human bone marrow (NHBM) and human myelolipoma (HM), the apoptotic events resulted abundantly present in NHBM compared to HM, which showed a small number of apoptotic cells. By contrast, Fas expression was strongly present both in NHBM and HM. These findings suggest that an altered function of Fas in myelolipoma is not able to trigger the apoptotic machinery. In rats, exposure to diazepam (DZ) during the last week of gestation is associated with behavioral alterations (in some cases sexually dimorphic) that appear when the animals reach adulthood. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of prenatal DZ exposure on the function of the gamma-aminobutyric (GABA)(A) receptor complex. Clinically silent adrenocortical adenomas are the most frequent abnormalities in the adrenal gland. In contrast, adrenocortical carcinoma is a rare tumor with an extremely poor prognosis. The factors responsible for the frequent occurrence of benign adrenocortical tumors on one hand and the rare malignant transformation on the other are not known. To test the Kirsten-Ras (Ki-Ras) alternative prenylation hypothesis in malignant transformation, we used a novel farnesyltransferase inhibitor competitive to farnesyl-pyrophosphate, RPR130401, and a CaaX peptidomimetic geranylgeranyltransferase-1 inhibitor GGTI-298. In Ki-Ras-overexpressing transformed adrenocortical cells, RPR130401 at 1-10 microM inhibited very efficiently the [(3)H]farnesyl but not [(3)H]geranylgeranyl transfer to Ras. However, proliferation of these cells was only slightly sensitive to RPR130401 (IC(50)=30 microM). Very preterm birth: who has access to antenatal corticosteroid therapy?

International audience; We describe the administration of antenatal corticosteroid therapy (ACT) for liveborn very preterm neonates in a population-based study. A total of 790 very preterm neonates (between 24 and 31 full weeks of gestation) were included in this regionally defined population of very preterm neonates in France.
