In different tumor entities, the level of chemokine receptorCXCR4 expression has been linked with tumor progression and decreased survival. A detector for CLIC: main parameters and performance

Together with the recent CLIC detector model CLICdet a new software suite was introduced for the simulation and reconstruction of events in this detector. This note gives a brief introduction to CLICdet and describes the CLIC experimental conditions at 380 GeV and 3 TeV, including beam-induced backgrounds. The simulation and reconstruction tools are introduced, and the physics performance obtained is described in terms of single particles, particles in jets, jet energy resolution and flavour tagging. The performance of the very forward electromagnetic calorimeters is also discussed.

A Study of Gravitational Lens Chromaticity with the Hubble Space Telescope

We report Hubble Space Telescope observations of 6 gravitational lenses with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. We measured the flux ratios between the lensed images in 6 filters from 8140\AA\ to 2200\AA. In 3 of the systems, HE0512$-$3329, B1600+434, and H1413+117, we were able to construct UV extinction curves partially overlapping the 2175\AA\ feature and characterize the properties of the dust relative to the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. In HE1104$-$1804 we detect chromatic microlensing and use it to study the physical properties of the quasar accretion disk. For a Gaussian model of the disk $\exp(-r^2/2 r_s^2)$, scaling with wavelength as $r_s \propto \lambda^p$, we estimate $r_s(\l…

Upgrade of the ATLAS Level-1 Trigger with event topology information

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2015 will collide proton beams with increased luminosity from \unit{10^{34}} up to \unit{3 \times 10^{34}cm^{-2}s^{-1}}. ATLAS is an LHC experiment designed to measure decay properties of high energetic particles produced in the protons collisions. The higher luminosity places stringent operational and physical requirements on the ATLAS Trigger in order to reduce the 40MHz collision rate to a manageable event storage rate of 1kHz while at the same time, selecting those events with valuable physics meaning. Construction, Commissioning and First Results of a Highly Granular Hadron Calorimeter with SiPM-on-Tile Read-out

The CALICE collaboration is developing a highly granular Analogue Hadron sampling CALorimeter (AHCAL) for a future electron-positron collider. Very small detection units are required for the AHCAL due to an optimized design for the Particle Flow Algorithm. This is realized with scintillator tiles each wrapped in reflector foil and individually read out by a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM). These scintillator tiles and SiPMs are assembled on readout boards (HCAL Base Unit, HBU) which are integrated later on in the AHCAL detector stack. A pedagogical approach to the Magnus expansion

Time-dependent perturbation theory as a tool to compute approximate solutions of the Schrodinger equation does not preserve unitarity. Here we present, in a simple way, how the Magnus expansion (also known as exponential perturbation theory) provides such unitary approximate solutions. The purpose is to illustrate the importance and consequences of such a property. We suggest that the Magnus expansion may be introduced to students in advanced courses of quantum mechanics.

Advanced models for nonlocal magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates based on Reissner mixed variational theorem

In the present work, nonlocal layer-wise models for the analysis of magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates are formulated. An Eringen non-local continuum behaviour is assumed for the layers material; in particular, as usual in plate theories, partial in-plane nonlocality is assumed whereas local constitutive behaviour is considered in the thickness direction. The proposed plate theories are obtained via the Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem, assuming the generalized displacements and generalized out-of-plane stresses as primary variables, and expressing them as through-the-thickness expansions of suitably selected functions, considering the expansion order as a free parameter.
