Optimization of Cultural Heritage Virtual Environments for Gaming Applications
2020
Serious games are games with a purpose beyond entertainment and are widely acknowledged as fruitful tools for learning and developing skills across multiple domains, including educational enhancement. In the last few years, the world of serious games has widely increased. The use of these types of games can aid in classrooms to not only help the students learn concepts but also to improve their motivation to do so. However, designing games necessitates very specialized personnel and the process can often be costly and slow. The adaptions of the design to the implantation phase are also difficult and the process needs more focus. The challenge of this study was to create a game within the co…
Sounds of the Cold War: gendered submarine narratives
2015
The article discusses different narrative and discursive ways in which American and Soviet submarine narratives of the Cold War period scripted nuclear-age submarine masculinity as a ‘structure’ of experience and a ‘structure’ of feelings different from vision-centred technologies of violence and warfare. The comparative discussion of the selected submarine narratives about Cold War underwater adventures is in no way exhaustive. But it allows looking into narrative constructions of submarine masculinity as articulations of subtle ‘gender’ modifications in the cultural normative ideologies of the competing projects of hegemonic war-related masculinity, otherwise, perceived as coherent and si…

Higher Education in the BRICS: Key Lessons and the Road Ahead
2015
The assumptions, by the volume editors and most contributors, at the beginning of this research adventure were that, despite the ongoing policy discourse surrounding the rise of the BRICS, were characterized by fundamental differences as regards the dynamics within the higher education sector and the links with societal actors on the one hand and macro level trends (such as demography and rising urbanization) on the other. The rich empirical accounts provided in this volume—around the four main themes surveyed—suggest that our assumptions were largely correct. Considerable differences do exist amongst the BRICS.

Measuring user responses to interactive stories: Towards a standardized assessment tool
2010
With the increasing number of prototypes and market applications of interactive storytelling, the understanding and optimization of how end users respond to computer-mediated interactive narratives is of growing importance. Based on a conceptual model of user experiences in interactive storytelling, a measurement instrument for empirical user-based research was developed. We report findings from an initial test of the self-report scales that was conducted with N=80 players of the adventure game "Fahrenheit". Interactivity was manipulated experimentally in order to validate the measures. Results suggest that the scales will be useful for comparing user responses to 'real' interactive storyte…
From Missionary to Military Discourse: Economic Expansion and Rhetorical Shifting in the Nineteenth Century Adventure Story
2010
The essay aims at establishing the nature of the relationship between the development of the 19th century adventure story, the systematization of colonial enterprise and rise of imperialism and the construction of the concept of Britishness intended as a superior and missionary identity category. The analysis of Marryat’s Masterman Ready (1842), Ballantyne’s Coral Island (1857), Stevenson’s Treasure Island (1882) and Haggard’s King Solomon’s Mines (1885) will show how the rhetorical pattern of the 19th century adventure story, with particular reference to space and characters, goes through transformations in accordance with the economic transitions the system undergoes shifting from mission…
Hands-on optics and photonics outreach in Riga
2014
A long-term exposition focused on optics and photonics was created in Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy at University of Latvia in 2010. Considering unpopularity of science in Latvia and lack of broadly accessible hands-on outreach activities for school children, as well as rapid development of advanced photonic technologies, this exposition was meant to involve more students to the natural sciences and modern technologies. Exposition covers 10 topics of optics – colors, diffraction, interference, polarization, reflection, liquid crystals, gas discharge, lasers, fluorescence, infrared and ultraviolet radiation. Students' visits are organized as an exciting adventure, which differ…
