Unpacking the Black Box of Wilderness Therapy
2016
Despite considerable progress within wilderness and adventure therapy research over the last decade, researchers are still unable to precisely answer why, how, and for whom this treatment modality works. There is also a need for more knowledge regarding the circumstances under which the treatment does not appear to be effective. In this realist synthesis, we attempt to unpack this “black box” of wilderness therapy more specifically, defined as a specialized approach to mental health treatment for adolescents. Through a focused review of the primary qualitative wilderness therapy studies, empirical findings are used to test and refine a key program theory. The synthesis results in a propose…

The Challenges of Translating The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn into Romanian
2020
Abstract A classic of American literature, Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has had a huge impact not only on American literature but also on world literature. Its bold and freshly creative style, its humor and the author’s endless verve and vitality, the multifaceted and novel approach to life have all contributed to its success and popularity. However, Twain’s greatest merit probably lies in the way in which he used language, crafting art out of the speech of ordinary people. His experiments with language, the vernacular in particular, have meant a huge step forward in American literature and have been a source of inspiration for many writers. However, the translation of th…

Punchline behind the hotspot : structures of humor, puzzle, and sexuality in adventure games (with Leisure Suit Larry in Several Wrong Places)
2021
Back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, during the embryonic era of computers, hackers, and all that digitalized punk jazz, who would have guessed that one of the period’s juvenile narrative arts—“interactive fiction” it was called at the time—would soon lead to a pop cultural revolution? A young scholar named Mary Ann Buckles did. Having spent years analyzing a piece of software that the present history knows as the most influential of all computerized text-based playthings, Adventure, in 1985, Buckles eventually completed her doctoral dissertation with a first-ever focus on something that had thus far been struggling to be taken seriously by cultural critics: storygames running on compute…
Le reportage sentimental: “variations imaginatives” et intertextualité dans La Vénus Internationale de Pierre Mac Orlan
2016
Pierre Mac Orlan is the witness of an age of crisis and of the emergence of a new sensibility. His writing is characterized by a formal and thematic ambiguity which has generated mistrust for his novels. The social fantastique that creates the unusual through objects and elements of modern cities offers an innovative approach to reality and a new poetics of the imaginary. Thus, through Ricoeur's theory on the imaginary, we will try to show that the ambiguity of Mac Orlan hides a new approach to the relationship between reality and imagination, between history and literature.
Re-reading Mary Seacole’s Wonderful Adventures through Bernardine Evaristo’s Soul Tourists
2017
The essay illustrates the ways in which the incorporation of authentic excerpts from Mary Seacole’s autobiography in Bernardine Evaristo’s novel Soul Tourists acquires a significant cultural value within the novel’s representational strategies. The essay also explores the extent to which Seacole — together with her work — can be thought of as a litmus paper in the context of Britain’s self–representation and strategies of identity delineation.
Understanding Action and Adventure Sports Participation—An Ecological Dynamics Perspective
2017
© 2017, The Author(s). Previous research has considered action and adventure sports using a variety of associated terms and definitions which has led to confusing discourse and contradictory research findings. Traditional narratives have typically considered participation exclusively as the pastime of young people with abnormal characteristics or personalities having unhealthy and pathological tendencies to take risks because of the need for thrill, excitement or an adrenaline ‘rush’. Conversely, recent research has linked even the most extreme forms of action and adventure sports to positive physical and psychological health and well-being outcomes. Here, we argue that traditional framewor…
