Na+ ions binding to the bradykinin B2 receptor suppress agonist-independent receptor activation.

1996

Control of the balance between receptor activation and inactivation is a prerequisite for seven transmembrane domain (7TM) receptor function. We asked for a mechanism to stabilize the inactive receptor conformation which prevents agonist-independent receptor activation. Na+ ions have reciprocal effects on agonist versus antagonist interaction with various 7TM receptors. To investigate the Na+ dependence of receptor activation we chose the bradykinin B2 receptor as a prototypic 7TM receptor. Decrease of the intracellular Na+ content from 40 mM to 10 mM of COS-1 cells transiently expressing rat B2 receptors activated the B2 receptor in the absence of agonist as shown by a 3-fold increase in t…

Extracellular Domains of the Bradykinin B2 Receptor Involved in Ligand Binding and Agonist Sensing Defined by Anti-peptide Antibodies

1996

Many of the physiological functions of bradykinin are mediated via the B2 receptor. Little is known about binding sites for bradykinin on the receptor. Therefore, antisera against peptides derived from the putative extracellular domains of the B2 receptor were raised. The antibodies strongly reacted with their corresponding antigens and cross-reacted both with the denatured and the native B2 receptor. Affinity-purified antibodies to the various extracellular domains were used to probe the contact sites between the receptor and its agonist, bradykinin or its antagonist HOE140. Antibodies to extracellular domain 3 (second loop) efficiently interfered, in a concentration-dependent manner, with…

Soil organic carbon stocks under recommended management practices in different soils of semiarid vineyards

2019

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) approach is widely used to estimate the C account through the use of standardized coefficients that are not site specific. For these reasons, the aim of the work was to define specific IPCC coefficient taking into account differences in pedological characteristics that affect soil C steady state. In a vineyard area of Sicily, the effectiveness of 5 years of recommended management practice (RMP) adoption on soil organic carbon (SOC) stock increases was evaluated by considering 100 paired sites distributed over four functional soil groups. Each site consisted of two neighbouring plots. The soil of one plot was managed with cover crops accor…

Templated growth of smart coatings: Hybrid chemical vapour deposition of vanadyl acetylacetonate with tetraoctyl ammonium bromide

2009

Hybrid aerosol assisted and atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition methodology has been utilised to produce thin films of vanadium dioxide from vanadyl acetylacetonate. Tetraoctyl ammonium bromide (TOAB) was used in the aerosol precursor solution. The films were analysed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Their optical and thermochromic behaviour was also determined. It was found that the use of TOAB had a templating effect that led to a halving in the particle size and that this consequently led to a significant decrease in the thermochromic transition temperature of the films to 34 8C.

Templated growth of smart nanocomposite thin films: Hybrid aerosol assisted and atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition of vanadyl acetylacet…

2009

Hybrid aerosol assisted and atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition methodology has been utilised to produce nanocomposite thin films of gold nanoparticles and vanadium dioxide from vanadyl acetylacetonate and auric acid. The addition of tetraoctyl ammonium bromide (TOAB) to the precursor Solution gave control of the size and distribution of gold nanoparticles in the vanadium oxide matrix. These reactions led to vanadium dioxide films with reduced crystallite sizes and enhanced thermochromic properties. The films were analysed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Their optical and thermochromic behaviour was also determined, This h…

Characteristics of the early flight phase in the Olympic ski jumping competition.

2004

Early flight phase (approximately 40 m) of the athletes participating in the final round of the individual large hill ski jumping competition in Salt Lake City Olympics was filmed with two high-speed pan & tilt video cameras. The results showed that jumpers' steady flight position was almost completed within 0.5s. The most significant correlation with the length of the jump was found in the angle between the skis and body (r=.714, p.001 at 1.1s after the take-off). This particular phase seemed to be important because the ski angle of attack was also related to the jumping distance at the same phase. Although the more upright ski position relative to flight path resulted in longer jumping di…

CHARACTERIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF DIFFERENT METHODS TO EXTEND THE SHELF LIFE OF FRESH-CUT FRUIT

2017

Evaluation of the antioxidant/antimicrobial performance of Posidonia oceanica in comparison with three commercial natural extracts and as a treatment…

2017

Abstract This research aimed at extending the choice of natural antimicrobials/antioxidants for food applications. Four plant extracts, Posidonia oceanica (PO), Green Tea (GT), Grape seeds (GS) and Grape skin (GK), were analyzed to determine their total phenolic content, antioxidant activity and in vitro antimicrobial performance. PO extract showed the highest total phenolic content (711 mg gallic acid/g extract) and antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger and Penicillium chrysogenum . The highest antioxidant (3.81 mg/L EC 50 ) and antibacterial activities (bactericidal against Gram positives and bacteriostatic against Gram negatives) were found for GT extract. The best performing ext…

Molecular dynamics and metadynamics simulations of electrosprayed water nanodroplets including sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate micelles.

2017

The behavior of aqueous solutions of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOTNa) under conditions of electrospray ionization (ESI) has been investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) and well-tempered metadynamics (WTM) simulations at 300 K and 400 K. We have examined water droplets with initial fixed numbers of water molecules (1000) and AOT− anions (100), and with sodium cations in the range of 70–130. At 300 K, all charged droplets show the water evaporation rate increasing with the absolute value of the initial droplet charge state (Z), accompanied by ejection of an increasing number of solvated sodium ions or by expulsion of AOT− anions depending on the sign of Z and by fragmentation i…
