This paper proposes a novel probability density function (PDF) for the distribution of local scatterers inside a disk centered on the mobile station (MS). The new scattering model is introduced as the unified disk scattering model (UDSM), as it unifies a variety of typical circularly symmetric scattering models into one simple model. By adjusting a designated shape factor controlling the distribution of the scatterers, both the uniform circular and uniform ring scattering models can be obtained as special cases. The internal friction associated with the shaft hysteresis or with the possible release of some shrink-fit coupling exerts a destabilizing effect on the over-critical rotor running, but may be efficiently counteracted by other external dissipative sources or by a proper anisotropic configuration of the support stiffness. Abstract. The Modular Earth Submodel System (MESSy) provides an interface to couple submodels to a basemodel via a highly flexible data management facility (Jöckel et al., 2010). In the present paper we present the four new radiation related submodels RAD, AEROPT, CLOUDOPT and ORBIT. The submodel RAD (with shortwave radiation scheme RAD_FUBRAD) simulates the radiative transfer, the submodel AEROPT calculates the aerosol optical properties, the submodel CLOUDOPT calculates the cloud optical properties, and the submodel ORBIT is responsible for Earth orbit calculations. Rich dynamics and anticontrol of extinction in a prey-predator system

This paper reveals some new and rich dynamics of a two-dimensional prey-predator system and to anticontrol the extinction of one of the species. For a particular value of the bifurcation parameter, one of the system variable dynamics is going to extinct, while another remains chaotic. To prevent the extinction, a simple anticontrol algorithm is applied so that the system orbits can escape from the vanishing trap. As the bifurcation parameter increases, the system presents quasiperiodic, stable, chaotic and also hyperchaotic orbits. Construction of large-area micro-pattern gaseous detectors

Particle physics experiments often comprise tracking detectors with areas of up to a few square meters. If a spatial resolution of the order of 100μm and high-rate capability are required, Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) are a cost-effective solution. However, the construction of large-area MPGDs is challenging, since tight fabrication tolerances have to be met to guarantee a stable and homogeneous performance. Abstract The main objective of the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is the investigation of the structure of exotic nuclei at the new generation of RIB facilities. As part of the preparatory phase for FAIR-NUSTAR, AGATA is going to be installed at the FRS fragmentation facility of the GSI centre for an experimental campaign to be performed in 2012 and 2013. Owing to its γ - ray tracking capabilities and the envisaged enhancement in resolving power, a series of in-flight γ - ray spectroscopy experiments are being planned. Abstract In this paper we present the phase A studies which were carried out for the optimization of the design and evaluation of the scientific performances of the Imager, which is one of the two main instruments under development for the INTEGRAL mission, selected by ESA as the next scientific mission of medium size (M2). These studies were done by Monte Carlo simulation, using the CERN GEANT-3 package. Both the whole geometry and materials defining the Imager were considered in the simulations.
An experiment on wind energy

We discuss an experiment on wind energy performed with home-made apparatus. The experiment reproduces a laboratory windmill, which can pump water from a lower level to a higher one. By measuring the gain of the gravitational potential energy of the pumped water, one can determine the power extracted from the wind. The activity was carried out with high-school students, in the framework of the Italian National Plan for Scientific Degrees-Physics. The proposed experiment allows teachers to discuss renewable energy sources with students whose knowledge of physics is limited to mechanics. Correlation and Spectral Properties of Vehicle-to-Vehicle Channels in the Presence of Moving Scatterers

This paper derives a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channel model assuming a typical propagation scenario in which the local scatterers move with random velocities in random directions. The complex channel gain of the proposed V2V channel model is provided. Subsequently, for different scatterer velocity distributions, the corresponding autocorrelation function (ACF), power spectral density (PSD), and the Doppler spread of the channel are derived, shown, and confirmed by the available measurement data.
