Climate change impact on SWAT simulated streamflow in western Kenya

2009

12 pages (3/4 p.); International audience; Weather and climate extremes such as droughts and floods have far reaching impacts in Kenya. They have had implications in a variety of sectors including agriculture, water resources, health, energy, and disaster management among others. Lake Victoria and its catchment support millions of people and any impact on its ability to support the livelihoods of the communities in this region is of major concern. Thus, the main objective of this study was to assess the potential future climatic changes on the Nzoia catchment in the Lake Victoria basin, and how they might affect streamflow. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool was used to investigate the impa…

Bird pollination in South African Salvia species

2006

Abstract Approximately one-fourth of the more than 900 world-wide distributed Salvia species (Lamiaceae) is ornithophilous. With few exceptions they occur in the New World, being predominantly pollinated by hummingbirds. In the Old World only Salvia africana-lutea and the recently described Salvia thermarum, both from the Cape Province of South Africa, were observed to be pollinated by sunbirds and white-eyes. Among the 23 South African Salvia species Salvia lanceolata is a further candidate for being bird pollinated. For the first time we describe and illustrate its pollination by Nectarinia chalybea and Zosterops pallidus. We compare the ornithophilous syndrome of the three mentioned Salv…

Prefazione a Emmanuel Iduma, Lo sguardo di uno sconosciuto

2020

By introducing Emmanuel Iduma's travelogue across Africa, which he traveled from East to West as a member of the Trans-African project "Invisible Borders", the Preface also explains the significance and urgency of launching a new African Literature Series for the respected Milan-based independent press Francesco Brioschi Editore. The Series publishes the works of African writers from the younger generations.

Educational Inequalities of the Second GenerationIn France and in the United States: school careers and attainment

2009

09025; Document de travail. Rapport pour la Nuffield Foundation. 34 p.; This paper aims to compare the educational outcomes of the second generation in France and in the United States and therefore to shape the patterns of educational inequality in both countries. The comparison is focused on children from two groups: North Africans in France and Mexicans in the US (compared to French born families and White third generation). By using two longitudinal datasets, the National Educational Panel Survey (Panel 95) of the French Ministry of Education and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), we examine their educational aspiration, careers and attainment in secondary…

Mutualistic tree-frugivore interactions in Afrotropical forests : from local ecological knowledge to the identification of network interaction patter…

2022

Frugivory in tropical forests is a major ecological process, as most tree species rely on frugivores for their dispersion, and numerous animal species used fruits as their principal sources of food. However, frugivory networks between plants and animals in Afrotropical forests are poorly described, and the mechanisms shaping them remain largely unexplored. This PhD thesis addresses a structural approach of the frugivory network, a plant-community approach and a methodological approach using local ecological knowledge and cameras. The first chapter describes the frugivory network of Afrotropical forests, based on a compilation of frugivory interactions from the literature that comprised >10,0…

FRÉDÉRIC BRULY BOUABRÉ | Cosmogonie

2023

Frédéric Bruly Bouabré. Cosmogonie, curated by Cristina Costanzo, is the first solo exhibition in Sicily of one of the founding fathers of African contemporary art as well as one of the most fascinating artists of our time. The exhibition project, initiated by 091 Art Project Gallery and supported by the Embassy of Ivory Coast in Italy and the Department of Culture and Societies, University of Palermo, presents the artworks of Frédéric Bruly Bouabré (1923, Zepreguhe – 2014, Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoir) following his 2022 retrospective at MoMA in New York, Frédéric Bruly Bouabré: World Unbound. Previously, his work has been shown at the Venice Biennale, both at the Pavilion of the Ivory Coast and …

The Role of the Internet in Overcoming Information Barriers: Implications for Exporting SMEs of the East African Community

2012

Small and medium-sized enterprises play a significant role in the East African Community, contributing highly to the national income and employing a significant number of people. Exportation provides a great opportunity for these enterprises to expand their businesses and improve their performance. However, they encounter a number of information- related barriers before and during exportation. Based on literature, this paper identifies these barriers and discusses how the internet could be used to reduce them. Based on the internet, international business and small business literature, the paper provides propositions and develops a model that will be useful for future studies in this area.

Mycobacterium tuberculosiscomplex lineage 5 exhibits high levels of within-lineage genomic diversity and differing gene content compared to the type …

2020

AbstractPathogens of theMycobacterium tuberculosiscomplex (MTBC) are considered monomorphic, with little gene content variation between strains. Nevertheless, several genotypic and phenotypic factors separate the different MTBC lineages (L), especially L5 and L6 (traditionally termedMycobacterium africanum), from each other. However, genome variability and gene content especially of L5 and L6 strains have not been fully explored and may be potentially important for pathobiology and current approaches for genomic analysis of MTBC isolates, including transmission studies. We compared the genomes of 358 L5 clinical isolates (including 3 completed genomes and 355 Illumina WGS (whole genome seque…

Genome-wide scan for selection signatures reveals novel insights into the adaptive capacity in local North African cattle

2020

International audience; Natural-driven selection is supposed to have left detectable signatures on the genome of North African cattle which are often characterized by the fixation of genetic variants associated with traits under selection pressure and/or an outstanding genetic differentiation with other populations at particular loci. Here, we investigate the population genetic structure and we provide a first outline of potential selection signatures in North African cattle using single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping data. After comparing our data to African, European and indicine cattle populations, we identified 36 genomic regions using three extended haplotype homozygosity statistic…
