Tool use in mathematics: A framework

2015

International audience; In the course of research into the interpretation of tools in the didactics of mathematics I found both voids and conflicts. This paper presents the results of my research and a resultant statement on tool use in mathematics education. The statement incorporates constructs from several theoretical frameworks and I consider the consistency of my statement on tool use with regard to activity theory.

Repositioning teachers as assessors : Compromised aspirations and contested agency

2021

The global trend to emphasise assessment for learning brings up the issue of repositioning teachers in assessment. The contemporary curricular policy reforms encourage teachers to take an agentic role in assessment, but multiple dimensions of the environment affect its realisation. Drawing on an ecological approach to teacher agency, this empirical study investigated how Korean secondary English teachers (KSETs) perceive and enact their own teacher agency in assessment within the ecosystem of Korean education. The dataset for the study comprises semi-structured interviews with 15 KSETs. The interview questions involved the main themes such as personal experiences over the life course regard…

eValue ja Amazing Case : ilmiölähtöisen oppimisen arvioinnin kehittäminen opettajankoulutuksessa

2019

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND BEHAVIORAL FINANCE: FROM MANAGERIAL BIASES TO IRRATIONAL INVESTORS

2014

Corporate governance is concerned about the ways in which investors assure themselves of getting a return on their investment, on one hand, and is focus on motivating managers to increase the company profit, on the other hand (the agency theory). Corporate governance emerges from the interaction between managers and investors. Managers are often more likely to invest the extra cash-flow or profit than to return it to shareholders. But, both managers and investors are lees then fully rational. Sometimes their behavior is based on cognitive psychology. In this context, we are dealing with two problems: managerial biases and irrational investors. Managerial biases focus on the illusion of opti…

Between school and working life: Vocational teachers agency in boundary-crossing settings

2009

This paper investigates agency among vocational teachers with reference to boundary-crossing between school and working life. Our study utilised interviews with sixteen Finnish vocational teachers. Adopting a narrative analysis approach, we found that the teachers had a variety of forms of exercising agency in terms of decisions deliberately taken, and the discourse and actions following these decisions. These forms were: (i) restricted agency, (ii) extensive agency, (iii) multifaceted balancing agency, (iv) situationally diverse agency, and (v) relationally emergent agency. The exercising of agency was intertwined with the main resources and constraints emerging from the teachers’ sense of…

Teachers’ professional identity negotiations in two different work organisations

2008

Recent studies have described professional identity as the interplay between individual agency and social context. However, we need to understand how these are intertwined in different kinds of work settings. This paper focuses on teachers’ professional identity negotiations as involving the work organisation, the professional community and individual agency. The data were gathered from two work organisations representing different management cultures and sources of control over teachers’ work. Open-ended narrative interviews were used, focusing on teachers’ own experiences and perceptions. A data-driven qualitative analysis was applied. Our findings indicated that different work organisati…

Preventing Violence in Seven Countries: Global Convergence in Policies

2007

Do governments take the measures that are supported by the best scientific evidence available? We present a brief review of the situation in: Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Our findings show surprisingly similar developments across countries. While all seven countries are moving towards evidence-based decision making regarding policies and programs to prevent violence, there remain a number of difficulties before this end can be achieved. For example, there continue to be few randomized controlled trials or rigorous quasi-experimental studies on aggression and violence. Results from experimental research are essential to both p…

Communication within contemporary families is increasingly and to a significantextent mediated through technological devices and digital applications.Although the everyday reality of many multilingual families is permeated by technology, research on their digital and language practices has been scant. This article argues for the need for eclectic approaches that draw upon theories, practices, and findings from research on transnational families and migration, digitally mediated family communication, parental mediation, multilingualism online, and family multilingualism and language transmission. Two empirical case studies are presented on multilingual family constellations in Finland in whi…

Teacher educators' collective professional agency and identity : Transforming marginality to strength

2017

Abstract This study investigated teacher educators' collective professional agency and identity within an identity coaching programme.
