Sedimentary sulfides can also form from sulfides produced abiotically during late diagenesis or metamorphism. A quantitative high-resolution summer temperature reconstruction based on sedimentary pigments from Laguna Aculeo, central Chile, back to AD 850

We present a pigment-based quantitative high-resolution (five years) austral summer DJF (December to February) temperature reconstruction for Central Chile back to AD 850. We used non-destructive in situ multichannel reflection spectrometry data from a short sediment core of Laguna Aculeo (33°50′S/70°54′W, 355 m a.s.l., central Chile). Early induction of genetic instability and apoptosis by arsenic in cultured Chinese hamster cells

In order to assess at what time from the beginning of exposure inorganic arsenic can give rise to genetic instability and trigger apoptosis, V79-C13 Chinese hamster cells were treated with 10 microM sodium arsenite for 24 h. Under these conditions, cell survival was >70% and cells showed neither an increase in chromosome aberration frequency nor a delay in cell cycle progression. Investigations, which were carried out every 6 h during the treatment, revealed an early appearance of genetically unstable cells, namely micronucleated, multinucleated and mononucleated 'giant' cells, as well as apoptotic cells. Enhancer trap infidelity in Drosophila optomotor-blind

Reporter gene activity in enhancer trap lines is often implicitly assumed to mirror quite faithfully the endogenous expression of the "trapped" gene, even though there are numerous examples of enhancer trap infidelity. optomotor-blind (omb) is a 160 kb gene in which 16 independent P-element enhancer trap insertions of three different types have been mapped in a range of more than 60 kb. Emerging brominated flame retardants and dechlorane-related compounds in European eels (Anguilla anguilla) from Latvian lakes

Abstract Fifteen halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) including seven emerging brominated flame retardants (EBFRs) and eight dechlorane-related compounds (DRCs) were analyzed in eels (Anguilla anguilla) sampled from five Latvian lakes. Out of the seven EBFRs, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) were found in eels in quantifiable concentrations, up to 6.58 and 33.0 ng g−1 lipid weight (l.w.), respectively. The mean total concentration of DRCs (∑DRC) in the samples was 0.62 ng g−1 l.w. and the geographical distribution of DRC contamination was nearly uniform among the selected lakes. Inverted responses of the carbon cycle to orbital forcing in Mesozoic peri‐platform marginal basins: implications for astrochronology
