Impact of Chaperonopathies in Protein Homeostasis and Beyond

2013

Chaperones have functions other than those classically attributed to them pertaining to protein homeostasis. These “other” non-canonical functions are the focus of chapter 8. The close interaction of the chaperoning and the immune systems and the impact of their malfunctioning on aging and cancer are highlighted. Conversely, the impact of ageing and cancer on the two systems is also underscored. The connections between stress, protein damage (including chaperones), protein misfolding, protein aggregation and precipitation, and tissue degeneration, are analyzed, indicating that all these processes are aggravated by a decline in chaperoning potential with aging (chaperonopathies of the aged) …

Phytoestrogens increase the capacity of serum to stimulate prostacyclin release in human endothelial cells

2003

Both the estrogen receptor (ER) alpha and beta isoforms are expressed in the endothelium. The ER beta has been assigned a crucial role in normal vascular wall function. Prostacyclin has been ascribed a beneficial effect on vessel wall physiology. Isoflavones bind with higher affinity to ER beta. We investigated the hypothesis that their administration to postmenopausal women can promote endothelial prostacyclin production.Twenty-five healthy postmenopausal women with mild climacteric symptoms received capsules containing 55 mg/day isoflavones derived from soy and red clover for 6 months. Cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were exposed for 24 h to serum collected before…

The Unbalanced Linguistic Aggregation Operator in Group Decision Making

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical problems in engineering. Also available from Hindawi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2012/619162 Many linguistic aggregation methods have been proposed and applied in the linguistic decision- making problems. In practice, experts need to assess a number of values in a side of reference domain higher than in the other one; that is, experts use unbalanced linguistic values to express their evaluation for problems. In this paper, we propose a new linguistic aggregation operator to deal with unbalanced linguistic values in group decision making, we adopt 2-tuple representation model of linguistic values and linguistic hierarchies to expres…

Metallic nanoparticle enrichment at low temperature, shallow CO2 seeps in Southern Italy

2012

We report on metal enrichment along a natural pH gradient owing to increased CO2 degassing at cold, shallow seeps of Vulcano Island in the Mediterranean Sea, off Sicily. We assessed composition of unfiltered and filtered seawater (<100 nm) along acidic zones ranging between ambient and pH 5, and showed that most seep derived elements are present as nanoclusters which then aggregate into larger colloids while mixing with ambient seawater along a pH gradient. Size and elemental composition of such naturally occurring nanoparticles assessed by modern characterisation methods were in good agreement with the results from conventional analytical methods. We provide analytical evidence for the pre…

Spatial aggregation and resampling expansion of big surveys: An analysis of wage inequality

2020

Income inequality is becoming a growing concern, worldwide, with wage inequality being the root cause of its recent escalation. With the aim of adding to the knowledge on this subject, this paper focuses on the spatial dimension of the problem, an aspect which has received less attention in the literature. We identify the determinants of inequality in wage distribution in Spain at a provincial level using the microdata of the Structure of Earnings Survey (N = 216,769) and estimate their impact from a spatial perspective. Spatial computation of wage concentrations, however, reduces the sample size to just 52 observations, leading to model challenges. To overcome this problem, we adopt a supe…

The foaming properties of camel and bovine whey: The impact of pH and heat treatment

2018

International audience; he effect of heat treatment (70 degrees C or 90 degrees C for 30 min) on the foaming and interfacial properties of acid and sweet whey obtained from bovine and camel fresh milk was examined. The maximum foamability and foam stability were observed for acid whey when compared to sweet whey for both milks, with higher values for the camel whey. This behavior for acid whey was explained by the proximity of the pI of whey protein (4.9-5.2), where proteins were found to carry the lowest negative charge as confirmed by the zeta potential measurements. Interfacial properties of acid camel whey and acid bovine whey were preserved at air water interface even after a heat trea…

From Mannose to Small Amphiphilic Polyol: Perfect Linearity Leads To Spontaneous Aggregation

2016

Terminally unsaturated and diastereochemically pure polyol derived from d-mannose shows spontaneous aggregation behavior in water solution. In order to study and clarify this unforeseen phenomenon, a conformational study based on NMR spectroscopy combined with ab initio structure analysis using the COSMO-solvation model was pursued. The results, together with X-ray diffraction studies, suggest a low energy linear conformation for this particular substrate both in solid states and in solution. For such small-sized acyclic carbohydrate derivatives, the linear conformation appears to be a key prerequisite for the unusual molecular self-assembly reported herein. peerReviewed

Fatty-acid preference changes during development in Drosophila melanogaster.

2011

WOS:000296521400044; International audience; Fatty-acids (FAs) are required in the diet of many animals throughout their life. However, the mechanisms involved in the perception of and preferences for dietary saturated and unsaturated FAs (SFAs and UFAs, respectively) remain poorly explored, especially in insects. Using the model species Drosophila melanogaster, we measured the responses of wild-type larvae and adults to pure SFAs (14, 16, and 18 carbons) and UFAs (C18 with 1, 2, or 3 double-bonds). Individual and group behavioral tests revealed different preferences in larvae and adults. Larvae preferred UFAs whereas SFAs tended to induce both a strong aversion and a persistent aggregation…
