Study of the Stability of Citrate Capped AgNPs in Several Environmental Water Matrices by Asymmetrical Flow Field Flow Fractionation

2021

Asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) coupled to UV-Vis and dynamic light scattering (DLS) detectors in series, was tested for stability studies of dispersions of citrate-capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in several water matrices. The main goal is to provide knowledge to understand their possible behavior in the environment for short times since mixturing (up to 180 min). Ultrapure (UPW), bottled (BW1, BW2), tap (TW), transitional (TrW) and sea water (SW) matrices were assayed. Observations were compatible with the aggregation of AgNPs, a change in the plasmon band and a size growth with time were done. Fractograms showed different evolution fingerprints in the function of the…

The city management: methodological considerations on multriple criteria techniques for the selection and aggregation of criteria

2012

The scientific community recognizes that factors such as “social cohesion”, “social quality”, “social capital” and other have a strategic role in the evaluation of the en-richment or the impoverishment of society which occurs in urban environment. These factors are used to evaluate the quality of a social system and to discriminate between different policy alternatives in the management of the city. Social cohesion, quality, equity, progress, etc. are aggregate indicators of urban quality, as they incorporate various components related to multiple points of view. The scientific community and some national and international institutions have proposed different sets of indicators for the esti…

A Long Journey into the Investigation of the Structure–Dynamics–Function Paradigm in Proteins through the Activities of the Palermo Biophysics Group

2022

An overview of the biophysics activity at the Department of Physics and Chemistry Emilio Segrè of the University of Palermo is given. For forty years, the focus of the research has been on the protein structure–dynamics–function paradigm, with the aim of understanding the molecular basis of the relevant mechanisms and the key role of solvent. At least three research lines are identified; the main results obtained in collaboration with other groups in Italy and abroad are presented. This review is dedicated to the memory of Professors Massimo Ugo Palma, Maria Beatrice Palma Vittorelli, and Lorenzo Cordone, which were the founders of the Palermo School of Biophysics. We all have been, directl…

Structural Motifs of Alkali Metal Superbases in Non‐coordinating Solvents

2020

Abstract Lochmann–Schlosser superbases (LSB) are a standard reagent in synthetic chemistry to achieve an exchange of a proton on an organic framework with an alkali metal cation, which in turn can be replaced by a wide range of electrophilic groups. In standard examples, the deprotonating reagent consists of an equimolar mixture of n‐butyllithium and potassium t‐butoxide. However, the nature of the reactive species could not be pinned down either for this composition or for similar mixtures with comparable high reactivity. Despite the poor solubility and the fierce reactivity, some insights into this mixture were achieved by some indirect results, comparison with chemically related systems,…

Do electrospray mass spectra of surfactants mirror their aggregation state in solution?

2011

One important feature in the gas phase chemistry of surfactants is to ascertain whether their aggregates produced by electrospray ionization reflect those formed in the starting solution. With this aim, we have performed ESI-MS, ESI-MS/MS and ER-MS spectra of bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOTNa) solutions in different solvents, i.e. water, water/methanol, methanol and n-hexane. The results clearly indicate that, notwithstanding the strongly different aggregation state in solution (direct micelles in water and in water/methanol, molecular dispersion in methanol and reverse micelles in n-hexane) and marked effects of the solvent polarity on the total ionic current, the surfactant aggregate…
