Classification of Chimney EVAR-Related Endoleaks: Insights from the PERICLES Registry

2017

Juxtarenal aortic aneurysms (JAAs) pose significant challenges for endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). A short or absent infrarenal neck typically excludes standard EVAR as a viable or reasonable treatment option. In this context, the use of chimney grafts (chEVAR) is gaining in popularity and applicability. These grafts are designed to course in the aortic lumen outside the main stent-graft to maintain normal perfusion to the involved target branches. As such, they may represent a promising and less resource-intensive option for management of JAAs. However, this technical strategy is not without challenges of its own, particularly the inevitable creation of “gutters” that result from the …

Quantitative Tissue Doppler Echocardiography: Physiological Nonuniformity of Left Ventricular Transmural Myocardial Wall-Motion Velocities and Gradie…

2001

Tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE) is a new method by which transmural myocardial function can be studied noninvasively. In order to investigate physiology and reproducibility, 24 young, healthy volunteers were examined by M-mode TDE. Nonuniformity of transmural tissue layer velocities became apparent: Subendocardial and subepicardial velocities of the anteroseptal myocardial wall (AW) were 3.5 +/- 0.7 and 1.3 +/- 0.5 cm/sec (P < 0.0001, t-test), whereas in the posterolateral wall (PW) values of 3.6 +/- 0.6 and 1.2 +/- 0.4 cm/sec (P < 0.0001, t-test), respectively, were revealed. The ratios, termed "myocardial velocity gradients" as a new indicator of left ventricular performance, were 3…

Analysis of cardiac and pulmonary complication probabilities after radiation therapy for patients with early-stage breast cancer

2009

Objective. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiobiological implications of clinical use of respiratory-gated techniques for postoperative radiation therapy of early-stage left-sided breast cancer after breast-conserving surgery. Material and methods. Radiation therapy treatment plans of 80 patients with early-stage breast cancer (stage I–II), receiving whole breast irradiation after breast-conserving therapy, were analyzed. The control group consisting of 47 patients received standard radiation therapy, and the respiratory-gated group consisting of 33 patients received deep inspiration-gated radiation therapy. Normal tissue complication probabilities (NTCP) for cardiac mortali…

Influence of rigid taping on the acromiohumeral distance in healthy recreational weightlifters

2021

BackgroundSubacromial pain syndrome is one of the most frequent injuries in overhead athletes, and it takes place when the acromiohumeral distance (AHD) is narrowed. Conservative treatment is the first approach to this syndrome, being shoulder taping one of the most used techniques. Although there are quite a few studies that analyse the effect of taping on the AHD, most of them do not include sham tapings. This study aimed to examine if the Relocation of the humeral head (RHH) taping produced an increase in the AHD in healthy recreationally weightlifter males, quantifying the change that may be due to a placebo effect.MethodsThe design of this study was a two-group pretest-posttest, in whi…

Effects of Resistance Training of Peripheral Muscles Versus Respiratory Muscles in Older Adults With Sarcopenia Who are Institutionalized: A Randomiz…

2018

[EN] This study compares the effects of two resistance training programs in peripheral and respiratory musculature on muscle mass and strength and physical performance and identifies the appropriate muscle mass parameter for assessing the intervention effects. Thirty-seven institutionalized older Spanish adults with sarcopenia were analyzed: control group (n = 17), respiratory muscle training group (n = 9), and peripheral muscle training group (n = 11). Measured outcomes were appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM/height(2), ASM/weight, and ASM/BMI), isometric knee extension, arm flexion and handgrip strength, maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures, and gait speed pre- and postinterve…

Biometric characterization of the anterior segment in a Sahrawi pediatric population

2013

Purpose: To examine the biometric characteristics of the anterior segment in a group of Sahrawi children. Methods: A total of 66 children (33 male and 33 female, aged between 8 and 13 years) participated in this prospective, observational study. The non-invasive Pentacam Scheimpflug imaging device was used to measure corneal thickness (CT) (at the thinnest corneal point), mean anterior (Km Ant) and posterior (Km Post) corneal radii, corneal volume (CVol), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and anterior chamber volume (ACVol). The contribution of age and gender to the various parameters was investigated. Results: CT values of the present group of Sahrawi children were 521.70 ± 3.92 m. Boys had thi…

Structured reporting of CT scans of patients with trauma leads to faster, more detailed diagnoses: An experimental study.

2021

This study aimed to determine whether structured reports (SRs) reduce reporting time and/or increase the level of detail for trauma CT scans compared to free-text reports (FTRs).Eight radiology residents used SRs and FTRs to describe 14 whole-body CT scans of patients with polytrauma in a simulated emergency room setting. Each resident created both a brief report and a detailed report for each case using one of the two formats. We measured the time to complete the detailed reports and established a scoring system to objectively measure report completeness and the level of detail. Scoring sheets divided the CT findings into main and secondary criteria. Finally, the radiological residents com…

Is MRI imaging in pediatric age totally safe? A critical reprisal.

2017

Current radiological literature is strongly focussed on radiation imaging risks. Indeed, given there is a small but actual augment in cancer risk from exposure to ionizing radiation in children, it is important to understand what the risk of alternative techniques could be. We retrospectively review literature data concerning possible MR imaging risks, focussing on the biological effects of MR, sedation and gadolinium compound risks when dealing with infant patients. The main concerns can be summarized in: (1) Biological effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMF) employed—whose mechanisms of interaction with human tissues are polarization, induced current, and thermal heating, res…
