Flavanones in Citrus fruit: structure-antioxidant activity relationships

2005

Epidemiological surveys have shown an inverse relationship between the intake of fruit and the incidence of coronary heart disease and some type of cancer. Data found in the literature regarding the flavonoids in general while this study focuses on flavanones, a subclass of flavonoids which occurs in Citrus fruit. The aim of this work is to elucidate the antioxidant or pro-oxidant behaviours of some common flavanones and to determine their activity–structure relationships as antioxidant using the crocin bleaching inhibition assay. The compounds studied were regarding both the aglycon form and the glycoside form. Data evidence that the substitution of the 7th OH group of the flavanones by a …

Hybrid compounds generated by the introduction of a nogalamycin-producing plasmid into Streptomyces argillaceus

2003

The combination of genetic material from different antibiotic-producing organisms is a versatile and ever-expanding approach for the production of novel, hybrid compounds possessing bioactivity. The introduction of a plasmid (pSY21b) derived from Streptomyces nogalater and encoding PKS for nogalamycin production into the host strain S. argillaceus A43 led to the production of three new compounds in addition to the normally produced mithramycin. The new compounds are hybrids in the sense that they share features associated with the genes of both the host and the introduced plasmid. The structural elucidation of the novel compounds relied primarily on NMR spectroscopy, which revealed the thre…

Flavonoids from Teucrium fruticans L.

2014

From aerial parts of Teucrium fncticans L. three flavonoids were isolated and identified as 5-hydroxy-6, 7, 3', 4'-tetramethoxyflavone, 5, 4'-dihydroxy-6, 7, 3'-trimethoxyflavone (cirsilineol) and 5, 4'-dihydroxy-6, 7-dimethoxyflavone (cirsimaritin). The former compound was found to be a predominant flavone aglycone constituent of the plant material. This is the first report on the isolation of flavonoids from the plant.

Lipoperoxyl Radical Scavenging and Antioxidative Effects of Red Beet Pigments

2012

Aerobic life is characterized by a steady formation of reactive oxygen species and free radicals, which is almost entirely counteracted by endogenous primary and secondary antioxidant systems. Maintenance of these systems is then imperative to ensure a continuous defense to cells and to avoid conditions known as oxidative stress. Apart from antioxidant vitamins, many compounds from the plant kingdom are now considered very helpful to maintain a proper cell redox balance. Among them, betalain pigments have received recent attention. Betanin (betanidin-5-O-β glucoside) is the main betacyanin from red beet. Redox potential, ability to interact with lipid structures and bioavailability in human…

New Triterpenoidal Saponins fromGypsophila repens

2007

Six new triterpene glycosides, repensosides A–F (1–6, resp.), were isolated from the roots of Gypsophila repens L. Their structures, established by extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopic experiments as well as MS analyses, were found to be based on gypsogenic acid (or gypsogenin) as aglycone, with three to nine branched or unbranched sugar moieties.

The structure and stereochemistry of atractyligenin

1966

Abstract The structure of atractyligenin C19H28O4, the nor-diterpenoidic aglycone of atractyloside C30H44O16S2K2 has been substantiated as Ia. The absolute configuration shown in Ia proves it to be a derivative of (−)kaurene.

Genistein in the Metabolic Syndrome: Results of a Randomized Clinical Trial

2013

Context: This study was performed to evaluate the effects of genistein on metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors in Caucasian postmenopausal subjects with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Objective: Our objective was to assess the effects of genistein on surrogate endpoints associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Design and Setting: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at 3 university medical centers in Italy. Patients: Patients included 120 postmenopausal women with MetS according to modified Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP), Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (Adult Tre…
