HEMT for low-noise microwaves: CAD-oriented performance evaluation
1995
This paper shows how a graphic processing of low-noise HEMT's small signal parameters, allows evaluating and comparing the actual performance obtainable in front-end applications. HEMT's tradeoff charts which solve tradeoffs among the basic low-noise amplifier performance are reported. Figures of merit for microwave low-noise HEMT which represent a fast way of evaluating HEMT in actual working conditions and of selecting the proper transistor, are defined. As an example, the tradeoff charts and the figures of merit of two HEMT's (Fujitsu FHR02FH, Sony 2SK677) and a pseudomorphic-HEMT (Celeritek CFB001-03) are reported and compared with the data sheets. © 1995, IEEE. Applying of Smart Technologies: Evaluation of Effectiveness
2012
This paper is dedicated to various aspects and perspectives of applying the smart technologies in software solutions. Based on experience acquired during software development projects, the author proposes criteria to evaluate the effectiveness of enhancing of existing products with smart technologies. The evaluation of effectiveness can be used to support decision making on implementing the smart technologies in existing products or products in development.
Visual scale factor for speed perception
2011
Speed perception is an important task depending mainly on optic flow that the driver must perform continuously to control his/her vehicle. Unfortunately, it appears that in some driving simulators speed perception is under estimated, leading into speed production higher than in real conditions. Perceptual validity is then not good enough to study driver’s behavior. To solve this problem, a technique has recently seen the light, which consists of modifying the geometric field of view (GFOV) while keeping the real field of view (FOV) constant. We define our visual scale factor as the ratio between the GFOV and the FOV. The present study has been carried out on the SAAM dynamic driving simulat…
A Functional Framework for Evaluating Method Engineering Environments: the case of Maestro II/ Decamerone and MetaEdit+
1996
CASE environments with method customisation capabilities and Computer Aided Method Engineering (CAME) environments have emerged during the last few years. While many research papers discuss the principles of method engineering and suggest requirements for new environments, we do not have critical evaluations of CAME environments using a wider method engineering framework. The aims of this study are twofold: 1) to build a preliminary framework for comparative studies of CAME environments, and 2) to increase the knowledge of the ‘state of the art’ in CAME by evaluating two CAME environments. We adapt a functional framework — originally built for CASE technology — to examine the following two …
Fast automated design of waveguide filters using aggressive space mapping with a new segmentation strategy and a hybrid optimization algorithm
2005
Waveguide filters are key elements present in many microwave and millimeter-wave communication systems. In recent times, ever-increasing efforts are being devoted to the development of automated computer-aided design (CAD) tools of such devices. In this paper, a novel CAD tool based on modal analysis methods, which improves the efficiency and robustness of the classical aggressive space-mapping technique, is presented for those purposes. The use of a new segmentation strategy and the hybridization of a specific combination of several well-known optimization algorithms is proposed. The CAD tool has been successfully validated with the practical design of several H-plane coupled cavity filter…
Efficient Analysis and Design Strategies for Evanescent Mode Ridge Waveguide Filters
2006
In this paper, a research on the compromises arisen in the design of traditional evanescent mode waveguide filters is carried out. As a result, clear design methodologies for optimizing length, losses, power handling and spurious-free out-of-band response are developed. In addition, an efficient and very accurate modal analysis tool for this kind of structures is presented. Several filters have been designed according to the different strategies proposed, and a prototype has been finally manufactured. Measurements and filter dimensions validate the proposed design procedures.
A computer‐aided instrument for pattern recognition of partial discharges
1998
In this paper a new computer‐aided digital system for partial discharge (PD) measurements is presented. The system is able to collect a great number of data, up to a pulse repetition rate of 100kHz, during the acquisition phase, thus allowing an off‐line analysis of PD data. After a description of the instrument, some experimental tests performed on epoxy specimens are here presented in terms of amplitude, phase and energy resolved histograms. Finally, emphasis is given to the very interesting use of the instrument for pattern recognition techniques in the discrimination and classification of discharges in HV components.
Design of complex sheet metal forming processes: a new computer aided progressive approach
2010
The growing interest in sheet metal stamping processes, particularly in automotive industry, led to three main issues in this field: request of very complex shapes; growing interest in springback control; solution of multi-objective problems. This makes the design of the sheet metal stamping processes very difficult, since the number of both design variables and design objectives are progressively increased; therefore, proper design methodologies to reduce times and costs are highly required. In this paper, an innovative design approach able to manage and optimize complex stamping operations is proposed. In particular, a progressive design approach based on the integration between numerical…
A Note on the Shear Influence on Belt Drive Mechanics
2007
Abstract Belt drives work often with short center distances and very different wrap arcs so that high adherence characteristics are required at the belt-pulley contact. In addition, the belt flexural stiffness reduces the contact width, but this decrease may be compensated in part by the belt softening due to the shear compliance.
Production planning in reconfigurable enterprises and reconfigurable production systems
2005
Reconfigurable enterprises and reconfigurable production systems represent nowadays one of the key responses towards the organisational and manufacturing needs arising in the new era known as mass customization. The paper proposes an Agent Based approach for the production planning activities in reconfigurable enterprises, characterized by complex, articulated and geographically distributed production capacities contended by many product families and composed by reconfigurable production systems that allow quick adjustment of production capacity and functionality consenting to manufacture different products of the same part family.
