Serum Malondialdehyde Correlates with Therapeutic Efficiency of High Activity Antiretroviral Therapies (HAART) in HIV-1 Infected Children

Serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels are increased in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected children, as it happens also in infected adult individuals. Introduction of high activity antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has promoted an intense decline in morbidity and mortality of these patients. Here we present data on the effect of HAART on serum MDA of HIV+ children and compare them with levels prior to HAART. MDA levels reflect, as other markers do, the HAART-induced clinical improvement and probably also the pro-oxidant/antioxidant side effects of the different drugs used. Oxidative stress of alternariol in Caco-2 cells

Alternariol (AOH) is a mycotoxin produced by fungus Alternaria. It is found in a wide variety of fruits and cereals products. AOH is able to damage human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of AOH in human colon adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells. Moreover, some events related to oxidative stress were evaluated: reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by oxidation of 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate; peroxidation of lipid (LPO) by malondialdehyde (MDA) production; and antioxidant enzymatic capability of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Metabolite profile and in vitro activities of Phagnalon saxatile (L.) Cass. relevant to treatment of Alzheimer’s disease

The present study describes for the first time the in vitro properties (inhibition of NO production and anticholinesterase) of Phagnalon saxatile (L.) Cass. (Asteraceae). The methanolic extract showed antioxidant activity that was measured by DPPH assay and beta-carotene bleaching test. The same extract inhibited NO production in the murine monocytic macrophage cell line RAW 264.7. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibition was assessed by modifications of Ellman's method. Melatonin protects human red blood cells from oxidative hemolysis: new insights into the radical-scavenging activity.

Antioxidant activity of melatonin in human erythrocytes, exposed to oxidative stress by cumene hydroperoxide (cumOOH), was investigated. CumOOH at 300 microM progressively oxidized a 1% suspension of red blood cells (RBCs), leading to 100% hemolysis in 180 min. Malondialdehyde and protein carbonyls in the membrane showed a progressive increase, as a result of the oxidative damage to membrane lipids and proteins, reaching peak values after 30 and 40 min, respectively. p38α and NF-κB regulate antioxidant defense in the liver through an age-dependent mechanism

p38α MAPK is a sensor of oxidative stress. The aim of this work was to assess the role of p38α in the regulation of the antioxidant defense in the liver with aging. Livers ofyoung and old wild type (WT) and p38α liver-specific knock out (KO) mice were used to determine glutathione redox status by mass spectrometry; malondialdehyde (MDA) levels by HPLC; mRNA expression of glutamate cysteine ligase (Gclc), Sod1, Sod2 and catalase by RT-PCR and nuclear levels of NF-κB subunit p65 by western-blotting. The combined impact of cold smoking and natural antioxidants on quality and shelf life of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) fillets

This study aimed to produce new value-added products from dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) as fillets when using cold smoking combined with natural antioxidants, obtained from Halocnemum strobilaceum a plant belonging to halophytes. Complexes of molybdenum(VI) with organic diacid ligands: The molybdenum(VI)-malonic acid system

Malonic acid (C3O4H4) and MoVI form in aqueous solution two dinuclear dioxo-complexes of which the stability is a function of the pH of the medium. Both complexes have a 1∶1 metal-ligand stoichiometric ratio, and the interconversion may involve a structural rearrangement. Conditional dissociation constants have been determined spectrophotometrically. Saline cryoscopy supports the spectrophotometric results. Salts of [Co(en)3]3+ have been isolated. The ligand behaviour of malonic acid differs partially from that observed for α-polyhydroxy ligands.

Thermodynamic data of mono-, di- and tri-methyltin(IV)-carboxylate complexes (acetate, malonate, succinate, oxydiacetate, diethylenetrioxydiacetate, malate, citrate, 1,2,3-tricarballylate, 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylate, 1,2,3,4,5,6-benzenehexacarboxylate) in aqueous solution are reported at t = 25 °C and I = 0 mol l−1. Thermodynamic parameters obtained were analysed to formulate empirical predictive relationships as a function of different parameters, such as the number of carboxylate groups of the ligand and the charge of the alkyltin(IV) cation.
