MIS-C and co-infection with P. vivax and P. falciparum in a child: a clinical conundrum.

2022

Abstract Background The ongoing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic represents an unprecedented global health challenge. Many COVID-19 symptoms are similar to symptoms that can occur in other infections. Malaria should always be considered in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection returning from endemic areas. Case presentation We present the first case of multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) and Plasmodium vivax-falciparum and SARS-CoV2 coinfection in children. Despite clearance of parassitaemia and a negative COVID-19 nasopharyngeal PCR, the patient’s clinical conditions worsened. The World Health Organization (WHO) criteria were used to make the diagnosis of MIS-C. Treatment wi…

Ecomorphological variation within and among the two marine species of genus Salaria: Salaria basilisca and Salaria pavo (Perciformes: Blenniidae)

2022

In order to highlight the variation of the form due to the presence of different ecological factors, we investigated in this paper the morphological variation between and within the two marine species Salaria basilisca and S. pavo. This study was based on two approaches, the Truss network and the geometric morphometric and involved specimens of both species divided into marine and lagoon samples. The two approaches yielded complementary results showing clear morphological discrimination of the two species Thus, S. basilisca is distinguished by a higher depth and length as well as a higher head with a compressed snout compared to S. pavo which has a shortened body, a lower head and a slightl…

2020

Louseborne relapsing fever in young migrants, sicily, Italy, july-september 2015

2016

To the Editor: During the early 20th century, at the end of World War I, and during World War II, louseborne relapsing fever (LBRF) caused by Borrelia recurrentis was a major public health problem, especially in eastern Europe and northern Africa (1,2). Currently, poor living conditions, famine, war, and refugee camps are major risk factors for epidemics of LBRF in resource-poor countries, such as those in the Horn of Africa (3,4). Increased migration from resource-poor countries and war/violence create new routes for spread of vectorborne diseases. Recently, several cases of LBRF have been reported among asylum seekers from Eritrea in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany (5–8). All of…

The role of visiting friends and relatives (VFRS) in imported malaria

2015

With the integration of immigrants in their host countries, a new, special group of travellers - Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFRs) - has emerged over time. The term VFRs refers in particular to immigrants who move to high-income countries from countries where socio-economic status is low, and regularly return to their country of origin, sometimes for fairly long periods of time, to visit their friends and relatives or, where women are concerned, also to give birth and spend the post-partum period with their family. Precisely because they are “special tourists”, VFRs are considered to be at higher risk than other regular travellers of contracting diseases like tuberculosis, HIV and malar…

Lieu de résidence et discrimination salariale

2010
