Selective determination of ammonium in water based on HPLC and chemiluminescence detection

2005

Abstract A selective and sensitive method has been developed for liquid chromatographic determination of ammonium in water samples. The analyte is derivatized with Dansyl Chloride prior to injection into HPLC. Optimal solution derivatization conditions have been established. The dansyl derivative is separated with the aid of a chromatographic column and post-column mixed with peroxyoxalate (TCPO) and H 2 O 2 in order to perform chemiluminescence detection. The detection limit achieved is 8 μg/L and linear response from 0.027 to 0.750 mg/L of ammonium was obtained. Ammonium ion was determined within 2.4 min under optimum chromatographic conditions. The method is fast, and near 10 derivatized…

A rapid and sensitive gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method for the quality control of perfumes: simultaneous determination of phthalates

2013

A rapid and sensitive analytical gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method for perfume analysis to determine the phthalates banned by the European Union Regulation on cosmetic samples is presented. This method has been tested in commercial alcoholic perfume samples for the determination of the following seven phthalates: dibutyl phthalate, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, bis(2-methoxyethyl) phthalate, n-pentyl-isopentylphthalate, di-n-pentyl phthalate, diisopentylphthalate and benzyl butyl phthalate. Sample evaporation and redissolution in ethanol is carried out before GC-MS analysis, with no dilution of the sample. External calibration and standard addition calibration are compared …

A cost-effective method for estimating di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate in coastal sediments.

2013

This study describes the development of a new method for the analysis of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) using 0.1-0.3 g of sediment sample, based on matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD) using C18 as dispersant phase (0.4 g) and acetonitrile-water as eluting solvent (3.4 mL 1:3.25, v/v). No evaporation step is required. 3 mL of extracts were processed on-line by in-tube solid phase microextraction (IT-SPME) coupled to capillary liquid chromatography (CapLC) and diode array detector (DAD). A short analytical column Zorbax SB C18 (35×0.5 mm, 5 μm) provided suitable results. FTIR-ATR was employed for characterizing sediment samples and MSPD procedure. The total analysis time was less than 20 …

Determination of UV-filters in sunscreens by HPLC.

2001

Simultaneous determination of six internationally authorised organic UV-filters in sunscreen formulations was performed by HPLC with UV spectrophotometric detection. The filters determined were: sulisobenzone, oxybenzone, octyl dimethyl PABA, octyl methoxycinnamate, octyl salicylate and homosalate. A C18 stationary phase and a mobile phase of ethanol water acetic acid (70 : 29.5 : 0.5) were used with a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. UV measurements were carried out at 313 nm. The time required for the analysis was 25 min and the limits of detection were between 0.2 and 2 mg/L, except for sulisobenzone, which gave a limit of detection of 20 mg/L. The procedure proposed provides an accurate, fast a…

Simultaneous quantification of the main organic acids and carbohydrates involved in tomato flavour using capillary zone electrophoresis

2002

A capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) procedure for the simultaneous determination of the major organic acids (oxalate, malate and citrate) and carbohydrates (fructose, glucose and sucrose) in Lycopersicon fruits is reported. Comparison of this method with routine HPLC methods indicates that the CZE method offers several attractive features (speed, resolution, sensitivity and cost) which significantly improve the determination of these compounds. Detection limits were better than 1.6 µg ml−1 for organic acids and from 13 to 24 µg ml−1 for carbohydrates; repeatabilities were better than 2.1% for migration times and between 1.4 and 7.3% for peak areas. The proposed protocol is very useful to…

Determination of the UV filters worldwide authorised in sunscreens by high-performance liquid chromatography

2001

Simultaneous determination of organic UV filters worldwide authorised in sunscreen formulations was performed by HPLC with UV spectrophotometric detection. The filters determined were: benzophenone-4, benzophenone-3, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, octyl dimethyl PABA, octyl methoxycinnamate, homosalate and octyl salicylate. A C18 stationary phase and an isocratic mobile phase of ethanol-water-acetic acid (70:29.5:0.5) containing 65.4 mM of hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin, were used with a flow-rate of 0.6 ml/min. UV measurements were carried out at 313 nm. The time required for the analysis was 20 min and the limits of detection were between 1.5 and 2.3 mg/l. The procedure proposed provides…

Estimation of the presence of unmetabolized dialkyl phthalates in untreated human urine by an on-line miniaturized reliable method

2015

Abstract At present, human exposure to dialkyl phthalates is assessed through urinary measurement of their metabolites due mainly to contamination in their analysis by their ubiquitous presence. An on-line miniaturized method and the processing of the untreated urine samples have been the key factors for minimizing contamination and achieving unbiased results. Di(2-ethylhexyl) (DEHP), diethyl (DEP), dibutyl (DBP) and mono-ethylhexyl (MEHP) phthalates in urine samples have been included in the study; MEHP as metabolite of the main dialkyl phthalate such as DEHP. On-line in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME)-capillary liquid chromatography (CapLC) with diode array detection (DAD) is e…

Objective, Noninvasive Evaluation of Velopharyngeal Function in Cleft and Noncleft Patients

1998

Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate a new diagnostic method that provides an approach to noninvasive, objective measurement of velopharyngeal movement by acoustic determination of epipharyngeal volume changes with velopharyngeal muscle function. Design This was a case control study, using consecutive samples. Setting This study took place at the Cleft Palate Rehabilitation Center of the University of Mainz, Germany. Patients Subjects were 29 consecutive cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients and 31 controls (21 patients with dysgnathia and 10 healthy volunteers). Intervention A series of transnasal acoustic measurements (pressure wave: 55 dB for 2 milliseconds) of epipharyng…

Sensitive determination of aliphatic amines in water by high-performance liquid chromatography with chemiluminescence detection.

2004

A sensitive method has been developed for liquid chromatographic determination of short aliphatic amines in water samples. Analytes are preconcentrated and dansylated on solid sorbents (C18 solid-phase extraction cartridges). The dansyl derivatives are chromatographed and post-column mixed with peroxyoxalate (TCPO) and H2O2 in order to perform chemiluminescence detection. Optimal results have been obtained using a sample volume of 5 ml. The method has been applied to the quantification or screening of several aliphatic amines: methylamine, ethylamine, butylamine, diethylamine, pentylamine and hexylamine. The screening procedure has been developed including also polyamines (putrescine, cadav…

High resolution x-ray investigation of periodically poled lithium tantalate crystals with short periodicity

2009

Domain engineering technology in lithium tantalate is a well studied approach for nonlinear optical applications. However, for several cases of interest, the realization of short period structures (< 2 m) is required, which make their characterization difficult with standard techniques. In this work, we show that high resolution x-ray diffraction is a convenient approach for the characterization of such structures, allowing us to obtain in a nondestructive fashion information such as the average domain period, the domain wall inclination, and the overall structure quality.
