Acoustic rhinometry in pre-school children.

1993

Acoustic rhinometry was performed in 35 normal nose-breathing children between 3 and 6 years. The average cross-sectional areas at the nasal valve, at the anterior end of the turbinates, and in the nasopharynx were 0.34 +/- 0.06 cm2, 0.35 +/- 0.08 cm2 and 1.37 +/- 0.48 cm2 respectively. The average minimal cross-sectional area was 0.29 +/- 0.06 cm2. The minimal cross-sectional area was located at the nasal valve in 14 and at the anterior end of nasal turbinates in 21 of the 35 children. As would be expected, the cross-sectional areas at different sites of the nasal cavity increased with increasing age of the children. But, whereas the minimal cross-sectional area increased by 0.024 cm2 per …

Evaluation of the healing of precoated vascular dacron prostheses.

1991

Knitted and woven Dacron grafts commercially coated with bovine collagen, gelatin and human albumin were implanted end-to-side between the infrarenal aorta and the bifurcation in 35 growing pigs. Grafts were explanted after 4, 8 and 12 weeks and compared to 6 uncoated knitted prostheses preclotted with blood that served as a control. Uncoated grafts rapidly developed a firmly attached neointima lined with endothelium. Compared with coated grafts the thrombus-free area of uncoated grafts was significantly larger (P less than 0.05). The slow resorption of albumin resulted in a delayed and incomplete neointimal healing and failing graft incorporation. Although the bovine collagen was only mini…

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

2019

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) represents a valuable neurophysiological technique useful for both research and clinical practice purposes [1]. TMS acts by inducing electrical fields which cause electric currents to flow in targeted cortical areas. These currents interact with the electrical activity of the brain and can depolarize cortical interneurons and/or projection neurons depending on the characteristics of the stimulation. The induced excitation can spread throughout the nervous system by the brain’s normal mechanisms of propagation of neuronal signals. In this way, TMS can also induce functional changes in areas remote to the stimulated cortical area, including both functio…

Recent advances in polyoxometalate-containing molecular conductors

2005

The recent advances in crystalline conducting molecular materials based on polyoxometalates (POMs) and organic donors of the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) family or perylene are discussed. We emphasise the wide diversity of POM structural types and the variety of packing architectures for the organic molecules that can be induced by these inorganic anions. Besides structural effects, we show that these hybrids can have interesting electric and/or magnetic properties. Thus, in the last years the common belief that this type of radical salts containing such big and highly charged anions could only exhibit poor conducting properties has been refuted by the production of new materials exhibiting hig…

Polyoxometalate salts of cationic nitronyl nitroxide free radicals

2008

The cationic nitronyl nitroxide free radical of the N-methylpyridinium type p-MepyNN + has been combined with [Mo 8 0 26 ] 4- and Keggin [SiW 12 0 40 ] 4- polyanions to afford salts ( p-MepyNN) 4 [Mo 8 0 26 ] DMSO (DMSO = dimethylsulfoxide) (1) and (p-MepyNN)4[SiW 12 0 40 ] 6DMF (DMF = dimethylformamide) (2). Herein, their structural and magnetic properties are described.

Restricting Magnetic Interaction Pathways in Polyoxometalate Salts of Cationic Nitronyl Nitroxide Free Radicals

2004

Abstract : Salts 1 and 2 that combine the [W 6 O 19 ] 2- Lindqvist anion with the cationic nitronyl nitroxide (NN) free radicals p -MepyNN + and n Bu 3 NCH 2 NN + , respectively, have been synthesized and their structural and magnetic properties have been studied. Keywords: Nitroxide radicals, polyoxometalates, magnetism. Introduction Ferromagnetism based on purely organic materials has raised a lot of interest during the last decade [1]. Most of the studies have been performed with nitronyl nitroxide (NN) radicals due to their persistence, stability and ease of functionalization [2]. Bulk ferromagnetism in these compounds arises from ferromagnetic interactions between open-shell molecules …

Nanopatterned ferroelectric crystals for parametric generation

2006

We report on recent results by surface periodic poling on lithium niobate and lithium tantalate. Such approach allows periodic inversion of the second order susceptibility with nanoscale features using insulating masks. We achieved a world-best 200 nm feature size, as well as good compatibility with alpha-phase proton exchanged channel waveguides in lithium niobate. Preliminary results of surface periodic poling in lithium tantalate also show similar characteristics. Surface poling is best suited for integrated optics devices in technologically-demanding configurations such as backward second harmonic generation and counter propagating optical parametric amplification

Identification of susceptibility genes in non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate using whole-exome sequencing

2015

Background Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) is among the most common congenital malformations. The etiology of NSCL/P remains poorly characterized owing to its complex genetic heterogeneity. The objective of this study was to identify genetic variants that increase susceptibility to NSCL/P. Material and Methods Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed in 8 fetuses with NSCL/P in China. Bioinformatics analysis was performed using commercially available software. Variants detected by WES were validated by Sanger sequencing. Results By filtering out synonymous variants in exons, we identified average 8575 nonsynonymous single nucleotide variants (SNVs). We subseq…
