This article presents the proceedings of a symposium at the 2004 International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism meeting in Heidelberg/Mannheim, Germany, put together by the German Society of Addiction Therapy and Research (DG-Sucht e.V.). The aim was to give an overview on recent findings from animal to human studies that were conducted by several research groups engaged in the alcoholism field in Germany for longer periods. Acetaldehyde (ACD), the first alcohol metabolite, plays a pivotal role in the rewarding, motivational and addictive properties of the parental compound. Many studies have investigated the role of ACD in mediating neurochemical and behavioral effects induced by alcohol administration, but very little is known about the modulation of neuropeptide systems following ACD intoxication and withdrawal. Indeed the neuropeptide Y (NPY) system is altered during alcohol withdrawal in key regions for cerebrocortical excitability and neuroplasticity. Wprowadzenie: Przedstawiono przegląd literatury z zakresu stylów radzenia sobie ze stresem i motywacji do uczestnictwa w terapii w grupie kobiet i mężczyzn uzależnionych od alkoholu. Wywnioskowano, że dotychczasowe dane empirycznie pozwalają na zaobserwowanie zróżnicowania ze względu na płeć, ale nie umożliwiają stworzenia jednoznacznych modeli w zakresie motywacji i radzenia sobie ze stresem przez kobiety i mężczyzn. During the addiction therapy patients describes a sense of emptiness, low level of life satisfaction and diffi culties in enjoying their lives. Those problems often caused them to return to psychoactive substance use. The research presented in the article is aimed at checking the dynamics of the above constructs during addiction therapy, which may help to better understand the treatment process.
