Patterning of a Surface Immobilized ATRP Initiator with an Inkjet Printer

2010

A new technique for patterning polymer brushes on the micrometer scale has been developed in which an inkjet printer was used to deposit droplets of acid on a surface-immobilized initiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The acid cleaved an ester bond in the ATRP initiator in a saponification reaction. As a result, the ATRP initiator was rendered inactive. To control the degree of defunctionalization, a new initiator containing a weak ester bond was derived from a tertiary alcohol. Comparison to an established ATRP initiator, derived from a primary alcohol, showed that the novel initiator was defunctionalized with a higher efficiency. Control of the reaction time allowed to…

Photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes in aqueous suspension of home-prepared titanium dioxide

2008

Abstract Oxygenated aqueous suspensions of home-prepared (HP) and commercial TiO2 catalysts were used in a batch photoreactor for carrying out the oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) and 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol (MBA) under different operative conditions. HP catalysts were synthesized from TiCl4 and underwent a hydrolysis treatment of different times under mild conditions. The textural characterization of catalysts was carried out with XRD, SEM observations, BET surface area and porosity measurements. For both alcohols the main oxidation products were the corresponding aromatic aldehydes and CO2. The HP catalysts exhibited selectivity values towards the aldehyde production up to 28% (BA convers…

Electrocarboxylation of aromatic ketones: Influence of operative parameters on the competition between ketyl and ring carboxylation

2007

Abstract The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of operational parameters on the competition between the formation of the target 2-hydroxy-2-arylpropanoic acid and ring carboxylation in the electrocarboxylation of aromatic ketones. For the investigated ketones, this competition has been found to be dramatically influenced by different parameters such as the water content and the ratio between the carbon dioxide and the ketone concentrations (q = [CO2]/[ketone]). In particular, the target carboxylic acid formation can be favoured with respect to ring carboxylation by operating at high q ratios or by addition of small amounts of H2O to the reaction medium. An increase of the wa…

Single-pump heart-cutting two-dimensional liquid chromatography applied to the determination of fatty alcohol ethoxylates.

2014

Abstract A setup for heart-cutting bi-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC–LC), constructed with a chromatograph provided with a single pump, an auxiliary 6-port 2-position valve (V 6/2 ) and a column selector valve (V CS ), is described. The possible ways of connecting the two valves for LC–LC, namely with V 6/2 first followed by V CS and vice versa, are compared. The possibility of using the setups for preconcentration followed by the backwards transfer of the preconcentrated solutes to the detector or to a second column is also shown. The V 6/2 -first configuration for LC–LC was applied to the characterization of industrial fatty alcohol ethoxylates (FAEs) using UV–vis detection. For th…

Unexpectedly ambivalent O-2 role in the autocatalytic photooxidation of 2-methoxybenzyl alcohol in water

2015

An unusual autocatalytic photooxidation of 2-methoxybenzyl alcohol has been observed under UV irradiation in aqueous medium. The homogeneous oxidation is catalyzed by the corresponding aldehyde that is also the main oxidation product. The trend of alcohol disappearance rate matches the typical shape of an autocatalytic process, where a crucial and ambivalent role is played by the presence of molecular oxygen. Low oxygen concentrations give rise to a zero-order reaction since the beginning of irradiation, while higher amounts of oxygen reduce the alcohol oxidation rate until the aldehyde reaches a concentration high enough to speed up the alcohol's conversion. Experiments performed by varyin…

Aqueous selective photocatalytic oxidation of salicyl alcohol by TiO2 catalysts: Influence of some physico-chemical features

2021

Abstract Partial photocatalytic oxidation of salicyl alcohol (2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol) to salicylaldehyde in water was investigated under environmental friendly conditions in the presence of home-prepared and commercial TiO2 (Merck and Aeroxide P25) samples under UVA irradiation. The photocatalysts were characterized by using BET, XRD, SEM and/or TEM techniques. The effects of crystallinity degree, pH (3–11) and presence of a hole trap (ethanol) on the photocatalytic activity and product selectivity were investigated. 4-Hydroxybenzyl alcohol was also used to study the influence of the position of the substituent group in the aromatic ring. High alcohols conversion and product selectivity va…

On the determination of underivatised fatty alcohol ethoxylates by electrospray ionisation–mass spectrometry

2006

Abstract The oligomers of fatty alcohol ethoxylates (FAEs) exhibit large sensitivity differences in mass spectrometry with electrospray ionisation (ESI–MS) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI). Standards of the oligomers from m = 1 to 7 ethylene oxide units (EOs) and linear alkyl chains from n = 10 to 18 carbon atoms were infused to examine the relative sensitivities or response factors in several media. The response factors of the [M + H]+ and [M + Na]+ peaks in 9:1 acetonitrile/water and methanol/water media containing acid buffers increased following irregular patterns when n and m increased. In methanol/water the response factors depended on the parity of m, being larger …
