Physiological and Psychological Effects of a High Dose of Alcohol in Young Men and Women

2014

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a high dose of alcohol on physiological and psychological parameters in young men and women with a previous history of alcohol consumption. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, state anxiety, attention, time estimation and manual dexterity were registered before (phase 1) and after (phase 2) intake of alcohol (38.4 g) or a non-alcoholic beverage. Trait anxiety was registered in phase 2 only. The results showed that acute consumption of a high dose of alcohol: i) improves attention in men (although the performance of alcohol consumers was not better than that of non-consumers); ii) blocks the systolic blood pressure hab…

Algunas reflexiones sobre el alcoholismo femenino

2005

Retinal function assessment in alcohol use disorder patients

2019

Objective. Retinal injury induced by ethanol consumption has been previously reported in animal models, including biochemical, histological and functional alterations. These results need to be clinically tested in alcoholic patients which do not report several systemic or ophthalmic diseases. Methods. Six patients with alcohol use disorder were recruited from an ‘Alcoholism Treatment Unit’. All of them with active alcohol consumption when the study was conducted or that had stopped drinking six months prior to the study, with no ocular disease or visual acuity alterations. All patients underwent fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT) as well as visual field test. Electrophys…

Glutathione-dependent formaldehyde dehydrogenase (ADH3) and low km mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2). New evidence for differential expres…

2011

Epidemiological and experimental studies support the involvement of lipid peroxidation (LPO) in retinal diseases. In addition to other pathogenic mechanisms not fully understood, the possibility remains that peroxidic aldehydes, acting as cytotoxic chemicals, mediate in the progression of chronic ocular disorders. To test proper mechanisms involved in removing peroxidic aldehydes from the retina, in an attempt to understand long-lasting changes induced by LPO, the oxidative and antioxidant enzymatic activities, as well as the retinal distribution and activity of glutathione-dependent formaldehyde dehydrogenase (ADH3) and low km mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2), were studied and c…

The Relationships between Early Trauma, Dissociation, and Alexithymia in Alcohol Addiction

2014

Objective Addiction is often considered a dissociative behavior that is related to alexithymia and developmental trauma. The study aims were to explore the relationships between early trauma, alexithymia, and dissociation. Methods A total of 117 (males=60; females=57) alcohol-addicted individuals and 117 healthy individuals (males=60; females=57) were administered a series of self-report questionnaires that assess traumatic experiences, alexithymia, and pathological dissociation. Results Correlation analyses indicated significant correlations between alexithymia, dissociation, and trauma and a significant difference between the target and control groups, with higher alexithymia and dissocia…

Group contributions to the infinite dilution partial molar volumes of alkanes, alcohols, and glycols in polar organic solvents

1997

Densities of binary mixtures of polar organic solvents with alcohols were measured at 25‡C. The solvents studied were N,N-dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxide, and formamide while alcohols were butanol, pentanol, hexanol, and 1,4-butanediol. Density measurements of hydrocarbons (from pentane to dodecane and some heptane isomers) + N,N-dimethylformamide were also performed. From these data the apparent molar volumes of alcohols and hydrocarbons as functions of concentration were calculated. The standard partial molar volumes were obtained by extrapolation to infinite dilution and are discussed in terms of group contributions.

An efficient one pot transfer hydrogenation and N-alkylation of quinolines with alcohols mediated by Pd/C/Zn

2012

A Pd/C/Zn mixture with alcohols has been revealed to be an efficient transfer hydrogenation system to quinolines. Furthermore, the metals mixture is able to activate alcohols as N-alkylating agents in a hydrogen autotransfer process. 1,2,3,4-Tetrahydroquinolines and N-alkylated tetrahydroquinolines from quinolines have been obtained with excellent yields in one step.

Analytical methods for the characterization and determination of nonionic surfactants in cosmetics and environmental matrices

2013

Nonionic synthetic surfactants, constituted of an assortment of classes, are common ingredients of industrial, household and body-care products. Alone or in combination with anionic surfactants, they perform a variety of functions including cleaning action, emulsification, skin conditioning, appearance and consistency modification, solubilization and dispersing agents. By far fatty alcohol ethoxylates (AEs) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs) are more extensively used than any other nonionic surfactant class; however, works appearing in the literature making reference to the analysis of other nonionic surfactant classes have also been collected in this review. The production volume worldwide…
