Serum uric acid is not independently associated with plasma renin activity and plasma aldosterone in hypertensive adults

2017

Background and Aims In experimental investigations conducted in rats, raising serum uric acid (SUA) levels resulted in the stimulation of intrarenal renin expression. Studies in humans exploring the association of SUA with plasma renin activity (PRA) yielded conflicting results. Moreover, little is known about the relationship of SUA with plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC). The study aimed to assess the relationship between SUA levels, PRA, and PAC and the influence of age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and hyperuricemia on these relationships in subjects with essential hypertension (EH). Methods and Results We enrolled 372 hypertensive patients (mean age 45 ± 12 years, men 67%) with u…

Die renale Sure- und Ammonium-Ionen-Ausscheidung normaler und adrenalektomierter Ratten und ihre Beeinflussung durch Nebennierenrindenhormone

1959

The renal excretion of acid and ammonium ions after an oral load of monosodium-phosphate (1.2 mEq. per rat) was studied in groups of adrenalectomized er sham-operated rats, maintained on 0.9 per cent NaCI solution and water, on the 6th or 12th day after operation. Untreated groups were compared to groups receiving either Corticotropin (25 U./kg./day s.c.) or Cortisone acetate (12.5 mg./kg./day s.c.) er (7.5 mg./kg./day s.c.) or D,L-Aldosterone acetate Cortexone acetate (0.15 mg./kg./day s.c.) from the 3rd to the 12th day after opetarion. In sham-operated rats Cortisone increased H+ excretion and diuresis on the 6th day after operation (3rd day of treatment). This influence did not persist o…

Novel SCNN1A gene splicing-site mutation causing autosomal recessive pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 (PHA1) in two Italian patients belonging to the s…

2021

Abstract Introduction Pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 (PHA1) is a rare genetic disease due to the peripheral resistance to aldosterone. Its clinical spectrum includes neonatal salt loss syndrome with hyponatremia and hypochloraemia, hyperkalemia, metabolic acidosis and increased plasmatic levels of aldosterone. Two genetically distinct forms of disease, renal and systemic, have been described, showing a wide clinical expressivity. Mutations in the genes encoding for the subunits of the epithelial sodium channels (ENaC) are responsible for generalized PHA1. Patients’ presentation We hereby report on two Italian patients with generalized PHA1, coming from the same small town in the center of S…

Normal-sodium diet compared with low-sodium diet in compensated congestive heart failure: is sodium an old enemy or a new friend?

2007

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a normal-sodium (120 mmol sodium) diet compared with a low-sodium diet (80 mmol sodium) on readmissions for CHF (congestive heart failure) during 180 days of follow-up in compensated patients with CHF. A total of 232 compensated CHF patients (88 female and 144 male; New York Heart Association class II–IV; 55–83 years of age, ejection fraction <35% and serum creatinine <2 mg/dl) were randomized into two groups: group 1 contained 118 patients (45 females and 73 males) receiving a normal-sodium diet plus oral furosemide [250–500 mg, b.i.d. (twice a day)]; and group 2 contained 114 patients (43 females and 71 males) recei…

Real-time ultrasound of normal adrenal glands and small tumors.

1984

The adrenals were studied prospectively with real-time ultrasound in a series of 60 healthy individuals and 13 patients with small adrenal masses sized 8-20 mm in diameter. In only one of the 60 healthy subjects was a normal adrenal gland delineated as a distinct hypoechoic structure. In all other instances only the highly echogenic suprarenal fat could be displayed. Visualization of small tumors was successful in 12 of 13 patients. The suprarenal area and small lesions were best demonstrated by a lateral intercostal approach using longitudinal and transverse scanning planes. The best access was through the 9th/10th intercostal space at the junction with the anterior and middle axillary lin…

Central obesity and hypertension. Relationship between fasting serum insulin, plasma renin activity, and diastolic blood pressure in young obese subj…

1994

This study was designed to evaluate the role of fasting serum insulin and plasma renin activity in obesity-induced hypertension. In view of this, plasma catecholamines, fasting serum insulin (IRI), urinary sodium excretion (NaU), plasma renin activity (PRA), and plasma aldosterone (PA) levels were assessed in young (age less than 40 years) normotensive (n = 27) and hypertensive (n = 14) subjects with central obesity and in lean normotensives (n = 20). Central obesity was evaluated by waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) according to the indication of the Italian Consensus Conference of Obesity. PRA, PA, IRI, and plasma norepinephrine levels were significantly (P < .05) higher in both obese groups than …
