Corrigendum to “Conservation value of forest plantations for bird communities in western Kenya” [Forest Ecol. Manag. 255 (2008) 3885–3892]
2009
A re-analysis of the bird data revealed a mistake within the database query. Only bird individuals that were heard were integrated in the results leading to lower total richness and number of individuals. In total 115 species and 13,331 individuals were detected of which 41 were forest specialists (43% of all individuals), 40 forest generalists (41%) and 34 forest visitors (16%). The statistical analyses remain very similar. We recorded significant differences in mean bird species richness, number of individuals and relative species richness among the five forest types (Table 1). Multiple pairwise comparisons showed significantly higher numbers of species in natural forest, mixed indigenous…
Data from: Effects of undergrowth removal and edge proximity on ground beetles and vascular plants in urban boreal forests
2019
Urban forests are regularly managed for human safety and aesthetic reasons, but they are crucial habitat for many species. Removals of undergrowth occur commonly in these forests, yet the ecological consequences of these operations are poorly understood. We sampled ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) and vascular plants along 20-m edge gradients in Finnish urban forests, in five stands treated 0.5−2.5 years earlier with undergrowth removal and in five untreated stands. We hypothesized that undergrowth removal and edge proximity would benefit opportunistic and open-habitat species, whereas shady-habitat species would be affected negatively. (1) Regarding carabids, diversity and evenness i…
Data from: Moving in the Anthropocene: global reductions in terrestrial mammalian movements
2019
Animal movement is fundamental for ecosystem functioning and species survival, yet the effects of the anthropogenic footprint on animal movements have not been estimated across species. Using a unique GPS-tracking database of 803 individuals across 57 species, we found that movements of mammals in areas with a comparatively high human footprint were on average one-half to one-third the extent of their movements in areas with a low human footprint. We attribute this reduction to behavioral changes of individual animals and to the exclusion of species with long-range movements from areas with higher human impact. Global loss of vagility alters a key ecological trait of animals that affects no…
Translation as alchemy: the aesthetics of multilingualism in film
2012
The aim of this paper is to explore the aesthetics of multilingualism in film. We start with a discussion of translation strategy in several films and continue with two case studies based on Azur et Asmar (2006) by Michel Ocelot, on the one hand, and Nostalghia (1983) and Offret (1986) by Andrei Tarkovsky, on the other. Our analysis does not involve a comparison between the original dialogues or monologues and their translations into one or several languages, but, rather, it focuses on the role of translation in film making, considering it independently from any pre-existing oral or written texts. This will lead us to a number of reflections about the possibility and the limits of communica…

Additivity of affine designs
2020
We show that any affine block design $$\mathcal{D}=(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{B})$$ is a subset of a suitable commutative group $${\mathfrak {G}}_\mathcal{D},$$ with the property that a k-subset of $$\mathcal{P}$$ is a block of $$\mathcal{D}$$ if and only if its k elements sum up to zero. As a consequence, the group of automorphisms of any affine design $$\mathcal{D}$$ is the group of automorphisms of $${\mathfrak {G}}_\mathcal{D}$$ that leave $$\mathcal P$$ invariant. Whenever k is a prime p, $${\mathfrak {G}}_\mathcal{D}$$ is an elementary abelian p-group.
A coincidence-point problem of Perov type on rectangular cone metric spaces
2017
We consider a coincidence-point problem in the setting of rectangular cone metric spaces. Using alpha-admissible mappings and following Perov's approach, we establish some existence and uniqueness results for two self-mappings. Under a compatibility assumption, we also solve a common fixed-point problem.
