Acid Catalysis with Alkane/Water Microdroplets in Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids are composed of an organic cation and a highly delocalized perfluorinated anion, which remain tight to each other and neutral across the extended liquid framework. Here we show that n-alkanes in millimolar amounts enable a sufficient ion charge separation to release the innate acidity of the ionic liquid and catalyze the industrially relevant alkylation of phenol, after generating homogeneous, self-stabilized, and surfactant-free microdroplets (1–5 μm). This extremely mild and simple protocol circumvents any external additive or potential ionic liquid degradation and can be extended to water, which spontaneously generates microdroplets (ca. 3 μm) and catalyzes Brönsted rather …
Prediction of Molecular Volume and Surface of Alkanes by Molecular Topology.

Molecular volume and molecular surface are expressed as a function of topological degree in alkane graphs. This allows not only a straightforward approach to calculate such physicochemical magnitudes but also an interpretation of the role of the local vertex invariant (LOVI) or valence degree, delta, as well as the connectivity indices in the prediction of physicochemical properties. The interpretation is based on the concept of molecular accessibility (as introduced by Estrada, J. Phys. Chem. A 2002, 106, 9085) for which precise mathematical definitions are provided.

Rhodococcus sp. strain BCP1 (DSM 44980) co-metabolizes chlorinated compounds and mineralizes a broad range of alkanes being highly tolerant to these toxic chemicals. Here, we present the high-quality draft genome sequence of strain BCP1 consisting of 6,231,823 bp, with a G+C content of 70.4%, 5,902 protein-coding genes, and 58 RNAs genes. Cloning of an alkane hydroxylase system in a long chain n-alkane- degrader Gordonia sp.

Five Gram-positive GC rich n-alkane degraders were isolated from a long-term accidentally contaminated beach in Sicily and identified as one Nocardia, two Rhodococcus and two Gordonia strains (Quatrini et al., 2008 J. Appl. Microbiol. 104:251-9). All the isolates were able to grow on long and very long chain n-alkanes up to C36. Diverging alkane-hydroxylase encoding genes (alkB) were detected by PCR using degenerated primers in all the strains. Multiple sequences were obtained from the Nocardia strain while only one alkB gene was detected in Rhodococcus and Gordonia. Modular one-pot synthesis of tetrasubstituted pyrroles from alpha-(alkylideneamino)nitriles.

2,3,4,5-Tetrasubstituted pyrroles have been prepared with high regioselectivity by a formal cycloaddition of alpha-(alkylideneamino)nitriles and nitroolefins followed by elimination of HCN and HNO2. The reaction allows the convergent construction of the pyrrole ring in four steps from a nitroalkane and three aldehydes.
