EAACI/GA²LEN/EDF/WAO guideline: management of urticaria

2009

This guideline, together with its sister guideline on the classification of urticaria (Zuberbier T, Asero R, Bindslev-Jensen C, Canonica GW, Church MK, Gimenez-Arnau AM et al. EAACI/GA(2)LEN/EDF/WAO Guideline: definition, classification and diagnosis of urticaria. Allergy 2009;64: 1417-1426), is the result of a consensus reached during a panel discussion at the Third International Consensus Meeting on Urticaria, Urticaria 2008, a joint initiative of the Dermatology Section of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), the EU-funded network of excellence, the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network (GA(2)LEN), the European Dermatology Forum (EDF) and the World Al…

Depression and cognitive deficits as long-term consequences of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura

2017

BACKGROUND Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is an acute life-threatening microangiopathy with a tendency of relapse characterized by consumptive thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and spontaneous von Willebrand factor–induced platelet clumping leading to microthrombi. The brain is frequently affected by microthrombi leading to neurologic abnormalities of varying severity. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS The aim of this observational cohort study was to investigate the prevalence of depression and cognitive deficits in 104 patients having survived acute TTP. TTP survivors were repeatedly assessed by means of different standardized questionnaires to evaluate depression (ID…

Increased percentages of calprotectin and TNF-Α double-positive monocytes in the acute phase of Kawasaki disease

2011

Background The acute phase of KD is characterized by a deficiency of suppressor T cells, marked activation of the immune system and increased secretion of cytokines by immune effector cells. Moreover, it has been shown that myeloid-related protein (MRP-8 and MRP-14) and S100proteins, the major calcium-binding proteins secreted by activated neutrophils and monocytes, contribute to cause inflammation in acute lesions of KD, and indeed one of the more common hematological alteration in KD is the increase of peripheral blood monocytes. Calprotectin, one of the major calcium-binding proteins, can lead to direct and indirect effects that result not only in inflammation but also in modification of…

Mast cell-derived mediators promote murine neutrophil effector functions

2013

Mast cells are able to trigger life-saving immune responses in murine models for acute inflammation. In such settings, several lines of evidence indicate that the rapid and protective recruitment of neutrophils initiated by the release of mast cell-derived pro-inflammatory mediators is a key element of innate immunity. Herein, we investigate the impact of mast cells on critical parameters of neutrophil effector function. In the presence of activated murine bone marrow-derived mast cells, neutrophils freshly isolated from bone marrow rapidly lose expression of CD62L and up-regulate CD11b, the latter being partly driven by mast cell-derived TNF and GM-CSF. Mast cells also strongly enhance neu…

Identification of pH-regulated antigen 1 released from Candida albicans as the major ligand for leukocyte integrin alphaMbeta2.

2007

Candida albicans is a common opportunistic fungal pathogen and is the leading cause of invasive fungal disease in immunocompromised individuals. The induction of cell-mediated immunity to C. albicans is of critical importance in host defense and the prime task of cells of the innate immune system. We previously demonstrated that the integrin alpha(M)beta(2) (CD11b/CD18) is the major leukocyte receptor involved in C. albicans recognition, mediating both adhesive and migratory responses to the fungus. In the present study, we demonstrate that various C. albicans strains release a protease-sensitive activity into their conditioned medium that supports alpha(M)beta(2)-mediated cell adhesion and…

Third Keystone Symposium on Cellular Immunology and the Immunotherapy of Cancer Antigen Processing and Presentation Autologous Human Dendriphages Pul…

1998

The recent identification of tumor-associated antigens and tumor-associated antigen-derived peptide epitopes recognized by cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTLs) in the context of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules has prompted the development of peptide-based vaccines for the treatment of human cancers, particularly melanoma. The design of such clinical protocols requires an understanding of the inherent immunogenicity of the peptide(s) and a choice of a facilitating adjuvant promoting cellular immunity against these peptides. We have evaluated the abilities of a series of defined synthetic peptide epitopes derived from MART- I/Melan-A, gp100, tyrosinase. and MAGE-3 or unfrac…
