Treatment of advanced prostatic cancer with parenteral cyproterone acetate: a phase III randomised trial.

1980

Summary— Forty-two patients with previously untreated T3/4 N1-4 MO/1 prostatic adenocarcinoma were treated with either cyproterone acetate (n=21; 300 mg intramuscularly per week) or oestradiol undecylate (n=21; 100 mg intramuscularly per month) after extensive staging which included open skeletal biopsy and pelvic lymphadenectomy in some cases. Subjective and objective parameters as well as signs of drug toxicity were recorded regularly. Evaluation after 6 months showed cyproterone acetate to be more effective in the following respects: (1) the significantly different castration effect as judged by plasma testosterone, (2) the objective voiding pattern and tumour response, with regression o…

Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda): differential in vivo cytokine responses in high and low compatible hosts.

2011

In order to investigate the factors determining the expulsion of intestinal trematodes, we have analyzed the in vivo cytokine responses at several levels and the local responses against Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda) in two host species displaying different compatibility with the parasite. The response of the high compatible host (mice) is characterized by a mixed Th1/Th2 phenotype in the spleen, Peyer's patches and mesenteric lymph nodes. At the intestine, a marked Th1 response with a marked increase of IFN-γ together with elevated number of mucosal neutrophils and expression of induced nitric oxide synthase were observed. The responses in the host of low compatibility (rats) with the par…

Transcranial direct current stimulation improves isometric time to exhaustion of the knee extensors

2016

International audience; Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can increase cortical excitability of a targeted brain area, which may affect endurance exercise performance. However, optimal electrode placement for tDCS remains unclear. We tested the effect of two different tDCS electrode montages for improving exercise performance. Nine subjects underwent a control (CON), placebo (SHAM) and two different tDCS montage sessions in a randomized design. In one tDCS session, the anodal electrode was placed over the left motor cortex and the cathodal on contralateral forehead (HEAD), while for the other montage the anodal electrode was placed over the left motor cortex and cathodal electr…

Recovery of Damaged Skeletal Muscle in mdx Mice through Low-intensity Endurance Exercise

2013

The lack of dystrophin in mdx mice leads to cycles of muscle degeneration and regeneration processes. Various strategies have been proposed in order to reduce the muscle-wasting component of muscular dystrophy, including implementation of an exercise programme. The aim of this study was to examine how low-intensity endurance exercise affects the degeneration-regeneration process in dystrophic muscle of male mdx mice. Mice were subjected to low-intensity endurance exercise by running on a motorized Rota-Rod for 5 days/week for 6 weeks. Histomorphological analysis showed a signifi cant reduction of measured inflammatory-necrotic areas in both gastrocnemius and quadriceps muscle of exercised m…

An optimisation model for daily manpower allocation in transhipment container terminals

2011

This work is motivated by the manpower allocation problem arising at the Cagliari International Terminal Container. Generally speaking, human resources allocation plays a key role in terminals with high labor costs, in order to achieve high levels of productivity and quality services for customers. As a result, terminal containers exhibit a growing interest in advanced decision support systems, in which optimization methods play a crucial role. In this talk we present an optimization model for manpower allocation in transshipment container terminals. The objective is to determine the optimal daily allocation of crane operators and trailer drivers at an operational planning level, taking int…

A contribution to the linear programming approach to joint cost allocation: Methodology and application

2009

Abstract The linear programming (LP) approach has been commonly proposed for joint cost allocation purposes. Within a LP framework, the allocation rules are based on a marginal analysis. Unfortunately, the additivity property which is required to completely allocate joint costs fails in presence of capacity, institutional or environmental constraints. In this paper, we first illustrate that the non allocated part can be interpreted as a type of producer’s surplus. Then, by using the information contained in the Simplex tableau we propose an original two-stage methodology based on the marginal costs and the production elasticity of input factors to achieve an additive cost allocation pattern…

Learning and the Price Dynamics of a Double-Auction Financial Market with Portfolio Traders

2006

In this paper we study the dynamics of price adjustments in an artificial market where portfolio traders with bounded rationality and limited resources interact through a continuous, electronic open book. The present work extends the model developed in [? ] introducing endogenous target individual portfolio holdings. We model the agents’ order-flow investment decision as an optimal choice given individual characteristics and the available information. We depart from the standard asset pricing framework in two ways. First, we assume that investors have imperfect information about the returns distribution. In particular, we assume that agents hold arbitrary priors about securities’ returns, w…

Social Network-Based Content Delivery in Device-to-Device Underlay Cellular Networks Using Matching Theory

2017

With the popularity of social network-based services, the unprecedented growth of mobile date traffic has brought a heavy burden on the traditional cellular networks. Device-to-device (D2D) communication, as a promising solution to overcome wireless spectrum crisis, can enable fast content delivery based on user activities in social networks. In this paper, we address the content delivery problem related to optimization of peer discovery and resource allocation by combining both the social and physical layer information in D2D underlay networks. The social relationship, which is modeled as the probability of selecting similar contents and estimated by using the Bayesian nonparametric models…

Forecasting the Equity Risk Premium in the European Monetary Union

2018

This article examines the performance of several variables that could be good predictors of the equity risk premium in the European Monetary Union for a period that spans from 2000 to 2015. In-sample, technical indicators display predictive power, matching or exceeding that of traditional economic forecasting variables. We also find consistent results in the fact that combining information from technical and economic variables improves equity risk premium forecasts, compared to using these variables alone. Nevertheless, out-of-sample exercises do not confirm in-sample results. Economic predictors show stronger out-of-sample forecasting ability than technical indicators, and apart from volum…

Stable-Matching-Based Energy-Efficient Context-Aware Resource Allocation for Ultra-Dense Small Cells

2017

Implementing caching to ultra-densely deployed small cells provides a promising solution for satisfying the stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements of delay-sensitive applications with limited backhaul capacity. With the rapidly increasing energy consumption, in this chapter, the authors investigate the NP-hard energy-efficient context-aware resource allocation problem and formulate it as a one-to-one matching problem. The preference lists in the matching are modeled based on the optimum energy efficiency (EE) under specified matching, which can be obtained by using an iterative power allocation algorithm based on nonlinear fractional programming and Lagrange dual decomposition.
