Installation of Amine Moieties into a Polycyclic Anodic Product Derived from 2,4-Dimethylphenol

2011

When 2,4-dimethylphenol is anodically treated, a dehydrotetramer with four contiguous stereocentres is readily obtained on a multi-gram scale. The substitution of a 2,4-dimethyl-phenoxy fragment by several amines was demonstrated, and the best results were obtained with primary amines. Optically pure α-chiral aliphatic amines yield diastereomeric mixtures that can be separated in most cases. The basic amine causes a partial hemiketal-opening of the bisbenzofuran moiety leading to an equilibrium within an α,β-unsaturated cyclohexenone. This dynamic behaviour occurs on the time scale of NMR spectroscopy and is also found by X-ray analysis providing a consistent picture.

Sediment quality assessment in Latvia water bodies

2006

Statistical examination of minor (l%-10 mg /g) and micro ( i > s ci ×t 1−p/2 (n) + C bi (where s ci — standard error of the mean, t 1−p/2 — Student distribution quantile, p — confidence level, and n — observations). The negative calculated geoaccumulation indexes (I geo ) testify unpolluted character of lake and well sediments in respect to Ni, Cr, V, Co, Br, Rb, Ba, Mn, Zn, Se, Zr, Ce, La, Nd, Lu, Tb, Eu, Sb, Yb, Cs, Sm, Sc, Hf, As, Gd, Ta, Th, and U. Contamination of well sediments with Cu and Sn characterises the following geoaccumulation index values — I geo = 2.5 (Cu) and I geo = 2.6 (Sn). The highest I geo values were obtained for Cd (I geo = 4.3) and Pb (I geo = 4.6) in Liepaja milit…

Interaction effects of enniatin B, deoxinivalenol and alternariol in Caco-2 cells.

2015

Enniatin B (ENN B), deoxinivalenol (DON) and alternariol (AOH) are secondary metabolites of filamentous fungi. These mycotoxins are contaminants of vegetables and cereals. They are cytotoxic and their effects are enhanced by their mixtures. The objectives of this study were to compare the cytotoxicity of ENN B, DON and AOH alone or in combination in human adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells and to evaluate the type of interactions of mycotoxin mixtures by the isobologram analysis. Cells were treated with concentrations ranging from 1.85 to 90μM (AOH) and from 0.312 to 10μM (for ENN B and DON), individually and in combination of two and three mycotoxins (from 1.85 to 30μM for AOH and from 0.312 to…

Determination of trace elements in gluten-free food for celiac people by ICP-MS

2014

Abstract This paper is the first analytical approach to the study of twenty heavy metals in the gluten-free foods for celiac people. Only the ICP-MS technique was used. One of the advantages about the use of ICP-MS for this characterization is the high sensitivity that improved the limits of quantification levels for some elements that are present at low quantities in some samples. The concentration values of As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, V and Zn in seventeen gluten-free food samples are reported. The highest arsenic and molybdenum levels were measured in Rice noodle from China (0.088 and 0.47 mg kg − 1 , respectively). The highest concentrations of some metal…

Battered child syndrome: cerebral ultrasound and CT findings after vigorous shaking.

1992

Child abuse by whiplash-shaking can lead to severe cerebral damage, neurological defects and mental retardation. Cerebral damage has been found with and without external evidence of head injury. We report the sonographic findings in two children after traumatization due to repetitive vigorous whiplash shaking. Cerebral sonography revealed cerebral edema at admission or within 48 hours thereafter. Follow-up studies demonstrated development of marked brain atrophy in both cases. The sonographic findings were confirmed by cranial computerized tomography. Doppler sonography was used to monitor cerebral perfusion by measuring intracranial blood flow. The clinical history of the patients demonstr…

Tracing anthropogenic thallium in soil using stable isotope compositions.

2014

Thallium stable isotope data are used in this study, for the first time, to apportion Tl contamination in soils. In the late 1970s, a cement plant near Lengerich, Germany, emitted cement kiln dust (CKD) with high Tl contents, due to cocombustion of Tl-enriched pyrite roasting waste. Locally contaminated soil profiles were obtained down to 1 m depth and the samples are in accord with a binary mixing relationship in a diagram of Tl isotope compositions (expressed as e(205)Tl, the deviation of the (205)Tl/(203)Tl ratio of a sample from the NIST SRM 997 Tl isotope standard in parts per 10(4)) versus 1/[Tl]. The inferred mixing endmembers are the geogenic background, as defined by isotopically l…

Solution-, solid-phase, and fluorous synthesis of beta,beta-difluorinated cyclic quaternary alpha-amino acid derivatives: a comparative study.

2008

The diastereoselective synthesis of cyclic beta,beta-difluorinated alpha-amino acid derivatives bearing a quaternary stereocenter is described. The process relies on the chemo- and diastereoselective addition of allylic organometallic reagents to fluorinated alpha-imino esters and a subsequent ring-closing metathesis reaction (RCM). Complete selectivity in the nucleophilic addition was achieved with (R)-phenylglycinol methyl ether as a chiral auxiliary. The resulting amino acids were introduced into peptide chains, which could facilitate the preparation of potentially bioactive dipeptide derivatives. In addition, the solution synthesis of these cyclic fluorinated alpha-amino acids was succe…
