Proliferative Activity and Cytometric Characteristics in Polyps of the Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses

Although several investigations have revealed the influence of cytokines, allergy, and environmental factors in polyp development, the etiology of nasal polyps is still unknown. To estimate the biology of this common disease the operative specimens of 50 patients who underwent surgery for polyps of the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses were examined; of these, 10 patients had recurrent disease and 23 patients had an allergy. A Phase II Study of Levofolinic Acid and 5-Fluorouracil Plus Cisplatin in Patients with Advanced Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Forty patients with advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCHNC) were treated with a combination of levofolinic acid 100 mg/m2+5-fluorouracil 375 mg/m2 in a 4-hour infusion plus cisplatin 20 mg/m2 in a 2-hour infusion for 5 consecutive days, repeated every 21-28 days. In the group of 20 previously untreated patients, a 90% overall response rate (ORR) with a 30% complete response rate (CRR) was obtained. In the group of 20 pretreated patients with recurrent and/or metastatic SCHNC, a 55% ORR with 15% CRR was achieved. Overexpression of GLUT-1 is associated with resistance to radiotherapy and adverse prognosis in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity

This study tested the hypothesis that GLUT-1 is a marker of radioresistance in oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC). A GLUT-1 labeling index (LI) was determined by immunohistochemistry in 40 pretreatment OSCC biopsies. Radiation responses were categorized by histopathology of the resection specimens. Associations between the LI and radiation response, Kaplan-Meier survival estimates and Cox regression analysis for the variables GLUT-1, T-stage, N-stage and chemotherapy were examined. The median LI was 64.2% (range 14-100%). Tumors with65% of GLUT-1+cells were more resistant to radiation (p=0.023). Lip squamous cell carcinoma in a Brazilian population : epidemiological study and clinicopathological associations

Objectives: It was evaluated epidemiological aspects of primary lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) and its associations with clinicopathological factors. Study design: This retrospective, cross-sectional study analysed a sociodemographic, clinical, and morphological data of HNSCC in a Brazilian population (n=30). Data analysis included descriptive statistics and bivariate analyses using the chi-square and Fisher's exact tests to compare the variables. Thirty evaluable patients with recurrent and/or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck region previously treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy were treated with a combination of methotrexate, vinblastine, epidoxorubicin, and bleomycin as second-line chemotherapy. Besides surgery and/or radiotherapy all patients had previously received chemotherapy as induction therapy or as palliation for recurrent disease. Human papillomavirus DNA in oral mucosal lesions

This study determined the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in oral mucosa cells from 121 patients with different types of oral mucosal lesions (13 squamous cell carcinomas, 59 potentially malignant lesions, 49 benign erosive ulcerative lesions) and from 90 control subjects. HPV DNA was detected by nested polymerase chain reaction, and genotype was determined by DNA sequencing. HPV prevalence was 61.5% in carcinomas, 27.1% in potentially malignant lesions, 26.5% in erosive ulcerative lesions, and 5.5% in control subjects. Changes in cytokeratin expression accompany squamous metaplasia of the human respiratory epithelium.

Quantitative DNA measurements in malignant and benign lesions of the upper aerodigestive tract.

Thirty-six patients underwent biopsy of clinically suspicious lesions of the mucosa of the upper aerodigestive tract. The biopsy material was evaluated histologically and cytologic smears out of the same lesion underwent quantitative DNA analysis using a numerical index derived from the single cell DNA content. In 30 patients, histologically diagnosed squamous cell cancer was confirmed by DNA analysis with the malignancy grade correlating with the morphologic differentiation of the tumor.
