Evolving epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance in spontaneous bacterial peritonitis: a two-year observational study.

Background Current recommendations for empirical antimicrobial therapy in spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) are based on quite old trials. Since microbial epidemiology and the management of patients have changed, whether these recommendations are still appropriate must be confirmed. Methods An observational study that exhaustively collected the clinical and biological data associated with positive ascitic fluid cultures was conducted in four French university hospitals in 2010–2011. Abstract Background Though general antibiotic consumption data is available, information on the actual patterns of prescribing antibiotics locally is difficult to obtain. An easy to use methodology was designed to assess ambulatory management of infections by Latvian general practitioners (GPs). Hypersensitivity to clavulanic acid in children

We present 10 cases (6 males and 4 females) of children aged 4 to 12 years, who were diagnosed with allergy to clavulanic acid (CL) and treated in the Paediatric Allergy Section of the University Hospital Dr. Peset in Valencia from 2000 to 2005. The children reported symptoms of urticaria and angio-oedema after receiving orally-administered amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (A-CL) for an infection. Diagnosis was based on the confirmation of an IgE-mediated aetiology by an oral challenge test with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. The role of antibiotic prophylaxis in reducing bacterial contamination of autologous bone graft collected from implant site

The aim of this study was to evaluate if antibiotic prophylaxis reduces the bacterial contamination of bone particles collected directly from the burs used for implant site preparation. Thirty-four patients underwent the surgical procedures for a total of 34 implant sites. One 1 gr. tablet of amoxicillin + clavulanic acid was given to the test group 12 hours and 1 hour before the surgery. The control group did not take antibiotic prophylaxis. Low bioavailability of amoxicillin in rats as a consequence of presystemic degradation in the intestine.

Several studies have been carried out to elucidate the causes of the low oral bioavailability of amoxicillin in rats. The hepatic first-pass effect of the antibiotic was estimated by comparing the area under the plasma drug concentration-versus-time curve from time zero to infinity (AUC0-infinity) obtained after injecting the drug into a mesenteric vein with the AUC0-infinity value obtained after injecting the drug into the jugular vein of conscious rats. No hepatic first-pass effect was detected. Nonlinearities in amoxycillin pharmacokinetics. I. Disposition studies in the rat.

Several features of amoxycillin pharmacokinetics in man are not well known in spite of the extensive clinical use of the antibiotic. In this paper it is demonstrated that amoxycillin disposition kinetics in rats is clearly nonlinear, and that this may be due mainly to its elimination mechanisms. At different intravenous bolus dose levels, and in steady-state perfusion studies, the most striking feature is an increased renal clearance as dose increases (from 3.5 to 7.0 mg kg-1 for intravenous bolus, and from 4.6 to 20.0 micrograms min-1 for intravenous perfusions). Polyethyleneglycol (PEG)-coated polyethylcyanoacrylate (PECA) nanoparticles loaded with amoxicillin were prepared and the influence of the PEG coating on the particle size, zeta potential, drug release rate and phagocytic uptake by murine macrophages was studied. Experimental results show that this colloidal drug delivery system could be useful for intravenous or oral administration. Multidrug and broad-spectrum cephalosporin resistance among Salmonella enterica serotype enteritidis clinical isolates in southern Italy.

ABSTRACT From 1992 to 1997, only six sporadic isolates of Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis from patients with cases of gastroenteritis in southern Italy exhibited resistance to broad-spectrum cephalosporins. Five isolates produced SHV-12, and one isolate encoded a class C β-lactamase. The bla SHV-12 gene was located in at least two different self-transferable plasmids, one of which also carried a novel class 1 integron.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the use of amoxicillin (1g) vs amoxicillin and clavulanate (875/125mg) after extraction of retained third molars for prevention of infectious complications.
