Analysis of laser shock waves and resulting surface deformations in an Al-Cu-Li aluminium alloy

2012

Abstract Laser shock processing is now a recognized surface treatment for improving fatigue or corrosion behaviour of metallic materials through the generation of a compressive stress field. In turn, the analysis of shock wave propagation is of primary importance to predict numerically morphological and mechanical surface modifications. Considering experimental and numerical analyses of shock wave propagation, and surface deformations induced by single impacts, a 2050 aluminum alloy having different microstructures was investigated under laser-shock loading. In a first step, the evolution of shock wave attenuation and elastic precursor amplitude was correctly reproduced by finite element si…

Graphical Schemes Designed to Display and Study the Long-term Variations of Schumann Resonance

2019

This work proposes and illustrates a graphical approach aimed at studying a wide range of features of the ELF horizontal magnetic field signal recorded at the Sierra Nevada station (Spain). In addition to the traditional long-term variations in the parameters of the first three Schumann resonances (their amplitudes, central frequencies and widths), many other properties such as the saturations of the magnetometers, anomalous values for the parameters or spectra with any kind of particularities are taken into consideration in this work. These features can provide us with complementary information about the long-term variation of Schumann resonances, give an estimation of the extent up to whi…

Pattern dynamics in a nonlinear electrical lattice

2003

International audience; In this paper, we present experiments using a nonlinear electrical line, modeling the FitzHugh-Nagumo equation, without recovery term. Different patterns are studied according to the para meters of this medium and initial conditions. We then propose to apply these results to the domain of signal processing. We show that erosion and dilation of a binary signal, two kinds,of binarization-one depending on an amplitude threshold, the other on an energetical threshold-and nonlinear filtering allowing noise removal can be obtained in the same medium.

The effects of intensity, frequency, static load, and shore hardness on different parameters in vibration sensitivity measurements.

1987

The effects of shore hardness, static load, frequency, and intensity of vibration on the amplitude and dynamic force effects of vibration were studied in conditions corresponding to those occurring in vibrotactile sensitivity measurements. The measurements were performed on three silicon plates of known shore hardness. The results indicated that the effect of differences in elasticity on the vibration amplitudes was evident at lower frequencies up to about 200 Hz whereas at higher frequencies the amplitudes remained at the same level, regardless of elasticity. On dynamic force the effect of elasticity was observed at all frequencies studied (50-500 Hz). The static load of the contractor had…

Resonant origin for density fluctuations deep within the Sun: helioseismology and magneto-gravity waves

2003

We analyze helioseismic waves near the solar equator in the presence of magnetic fields deep within the solar radiative zone. We find that reasonable magnetic fields can significantly alter the shapes of the wave profiles for helioseismic g-modes. They can do so because the existence of density gradients allows g-modes to resonantly excite Alfven waves, causing mode energy to be funnelled along magnetic field lines, away from the solar equatorial plane. The resulting wave forms show comparatively sharp spikes in the density profile at radii where these resonances take place. We estimate how big these waves might be in the Sun, and perform a first search for observable consequences. We find …

Dynamical binary modulation of ultrabroadband light beams by using principal states of polarization of liquid crystal devices

2009

Dynamical modulation of ultrabroadband beams, such as those produced by femtosecond laser or incoherent sources, is not an easy task due to the dispersive nature of the devices commonly employed. Phase modulation has been performed by means of deformable micromirror arrays. These devices are expensive and do not permit amplitude modulation. For micro- and nano-structuring of materials with femtosecond lasers is common to pattern the surface with the light irradiance produced by a computer generated hologram implemented onto a liquid crystal (LC) type spatial light modulator. This enables dynamical patterning [1,2]. Reduced spectral bandwidths, of the order of tens of nanometers, have been u…

Elastic neutron scattering of dry and rehydrated trehalose coated carboxy-myoglobin

2008

We report here a comparison between the hydrogen atoms mean square displacements measured by elastic neutron scattering on trehalose coated carboxy-myoglobin, at ILL on the backscattering spectrometers IN13 and IN16. An inconsistency is observed when comparing the mean square displacements measured on the two spectrometer, on samples of identical composition, since they resulted of larger amplitude on IN13 (either in condition of drought or after overnight rehydration under 75% D2O atmosphere), notwithstanding the lower time window accessible on this instrument with respect to IN16. Such inconsistency disappears when the data obtained on this last spectrometer are analyzed in two separate r…

EMERGENCE OF TRAVELLING WAVES IN SMOOTH NERVE FIBRES

2008

International audience; An approximate analytical solution characterizing initial condi- tions leading to action potential ¯ring in smooth nerve ¯bres is determined, using the bistable equation. In the ¯rst place, we present a non-trivial sta- tionary solution wave. Then, we extract the main features of this solution to obtain a frontier condition between the initiation of the travelling waves and a decay to the resting state. This frontier corresponds to a separatrix in the projected dynamics diagram depending on the width and the amplitude of the stationary wave.

Linear and nonlinear experimental regimes of stochastic resonance

2000

We investigate the stochastic resonance phenomenon in a physical system based on a tunnel diode. The experimental control parameters are set to allow the control of the frequency and amplitude of the deterministic modulating signal over an interval of values spanning several orders of magnitude. We observe both a regime described by the linear response theory and the nonlinear deviation from it. In the nonlinear regime we detect saturation of the power spectral density of the output signal detected at the frequency of the modulating signal and a dip in the noise level of the same spectral density. When these effects are observed we detect a phase and frequency synchronization between the st…

Other 2N− 2 parameters solutions of the NLS equation and 2N+ 1 highest amplitude of the modulus of theNth order AP breather

2015

In this paper, we construct new deformations of the Akhmediev-Peregrine (AP) breather of order N (or APN breather) with real parameters. Other families of quasirational solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation are obtained. We evaluate the highest amplitude of the modulus of the AP breather of order N; we give the proof that the highest amplitude of the APN breather is equal to . We get new formulas for the solutions of the NLS equation, which are different from these already given in previous works. New solutions for the order 8 and their deformations according to the parameters are explicitly given. We simultaneously get triangular configurations and isolated rings. Moreover,…
